Friday at the school's annual formal, Students front. grades 11, 12 and 13 have nominated seven young ladies and seven ybung men who they believe have contributed to the student life at the school. Nominated to represent the gentlemen's contribution to. school life are Chris Mittleholtz of Exeter, Ed Vanderburgt of RR 1, Dash- wood, Brad Baynham. of Exeter, Dave Bogart of Exeter, Jeff Marten's of RR. MIKE BURKE STUDENT COUNCIL Mike is the son of John and Molly Burke of Grand Bend. He was the Student Council President this year and an active football player. Mike has recently acquired his private pilot's license and en- joys flying. ,KAREN FORD ATHLETICS . „Karen lives at R.R. # 2, Grand Bend and her parents are Irvin and Elaine Ford. Karen has been an asset to various athletic teams during her four years at South Huron as well as serving as class rep for three years. DAVE BOGART ATHLETICS Dave lives in Exeter and is the son of Elaine and Ron Bogart. Dave has been an asset to the school's athletic program in his five years and has also been involved in the intramural program. Dashwood, Mike Burke of Grand Bend and Peter Kiungel of Hensall. Bend and Karen Kristofferson of RR 1, Centralia are the candidates, Students elegible for the. top position must be in their graduating year from either grade 12 or 13 with students from the three senior grades JANE SULLIVAN CHEERLEADING Jane is the daughter of Marion and Pat Sullivan of R,R. # 3, Dashwood. She was in cheerleading squad and was alsoahome room rep for four years, Jane has also been involved in 4-H and is presently a 4-H leader. BONNIE BAYNHAM STUDENT COUNCIL • Bonnie is the daughter of Larry and Elaine Baynham of Exeter. She was the secretary of 1979-80 Student Council and has been involved in YACMR (Youth Across Canada working with the Mentally Retarded), over the years. voting in the election later this week, According to a spokesman for the student council, the change from the queen competition to the student of the year awards was made to better reflect the con- tributions of students both male and female, to the school life and was basically an updating of the queen competition, The school's entire student council made the decision earlier in the year with a ratification by the student body, although there were some objections from the grade 12 and 13 students. Afterwards, the senior students met over the matter PATTI DOWN STUDENT COUNCIL Patti is the daughter of Pat and Bob Down of R.R. # 1, Henson. She served as the 2nd Vice President on this year's Executiveaswell as be- ing involved with various school sports. Patti is also an active member of the Huron County Junior Farmers. KARIN KRISTOFFERSdN THEATRE Karin is the daughter of Ber- nice and Bert Kristofferson of R.R. # 1, Centralia. She has contributed through her memorable theatre perfor- mances, including the lead role in the school musical "Cabaret". BRAD BAYNHAM YEARBOOK Brad is the son of Larry and Elaine Baynham of Exeter. Brad has been a frequent contributor of photographs to the yearbook and to the school and town papers. He is currently the editor of the yearbook. CHRIS MITTLEHOLTZ MUSIC Chris is the son of Cecile and Edward Mittleholtz of R.R. # 3, Exeter, Chris has con- tributed to our school through the music he has per- formed for theatre produc- tions, assemblies and the Music Club. He is Social Convener on this year's Stu- dent Council Executive. and decided to support the change. The student choice awards as they are known, will be made at the formal, at the traditional 12 o'clock time. This year's formal theme is "A Mexican fiesta.' PETER KLUNGEL THEATRE Pete lives in Hensall and is the son of Ann and Harry Klungel. Pete has been in- volved in the theatre program at South Huron and is the treasurer of the present Student Council, and YACMR. MELISSA VEAL ART Melissa lives in Hensall and her parents are Ross and Pat Veal, Melissa has contributed to school life through her hard work on the formal decorations each year, and has participated in several theatre productions. ED VANDERBURGT SCHOOL SUPPORTER Ed lives at R.R. # 1, Dashwood and his parents are Henry and Rita Vander- burgt. Ed has been an ardent supporterofmany school ac- tivities over his five year stay. He is also involved through the Intramural committee, the Badminton team,and is a stu- dent council rep. JEFF MARTENS STUDENT COUNCIL Jeff is the son of Martin and Anastasia Martens of R,R, # 1, Dashwood. He is a member of the school soccer team and has been a prefect in the past. Jeff was Vice President of this year's Stu- dent Council. By MRS. FRED BOWDEN CENTRALIA Baskets of spring flowers, streamers and white balls were arranged to make an attractive setting for the miscellaneous shower in the schoolroom of the United Church on Sunday afternoon honouring Elaine Powe, bride elect. Penny Smith entertained at the piano during the arrival of the guests who were later welcomed by Penny's mother, Mrs. Harvey Smith. Greg Smith was in charge of anniversary and Holy communion service to a packed church Sunday. Mrs. Sheryl Carroll was the organist, Rev. Smith spoke on "Pentecost and the Spirit of God," He welcomed all the guests from the surrounding churches, At the close of the communion service the Sunday School children and their teacher came forward for the blessing. The church was tastefully decorated with Spring •flowers. Personals Rev. The bride-elect was escorted to the front of the room to the strains of wedding music by Mrs. Russell Wilson, An address was read by Mrs. Earl Haist and gifts were presented by Ruth Ann and Kelly. Mrs. Ron Brittain and Mary Lou Tasko assisted in displaying the gifts. Lori Shoebottom and Jean Buswell were in charge of the guest book. Elaine, in a very capable manner expressed thanks and Mrs. Maurice Mac- Donald, Mr. Gote Wen- nerstrom, Lucan Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dickins, Exeter with Mr. and Mrs. Heber Davis. Tuesday evening Mrs. Greg Smith, the rectory, Kirkton welcomed the ladies of St, Patrick's A.C.W. President Marguerite Greenlee opened the meeting with a hymn. Marg Carroll read the Scripture. Several ladies assisted in prayer. • An article from the Huron Church news on Bishop'Ben' was read. The members were interested because his wife spoke to a group of ladies at Trivitt Memorial church, and several of the members attended that meeting and had the pleasure of listening to a 'tape' of her speech at a later meeting. The meeting closed with prayer after discussing a banquet and packing a bale in June. Mrs. Smith invited the ladies to the dining room, for buffet refreshments served from. a beautiful arranged table a pleasant social hour followed. Mr. Michael Davis at- tended the "Indi 500" on the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Creery, Kirkton and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dobbs, Exeter called on Mr. and Mrs. Heber Davis, Sunday af- ternoon. for the lovely and useful gifts and to the committee in charge of arranging the shower. Sunday Service Mr, Paul Schott speaking on the subject "Rise Up, Men and Women of God" used the "Parable of the Yeast" as a Biblical reference at Sun- day's United Church serice. Jesus compared the Kingdom of God with yeast. Just as the yeast can change the character of the bread, in the same manner, God's presence can change the world. Christianity has brought many changes to life itself. Many people are benefited by the religious programs on television. Yeast is really our faith but it must be kept alive to be effective. This coming Sunday the Sunday School anniversary will be held at 11 a.m. You are reminded of the change of time. Personals Ralph Lightfoot returned home from Joseph's Hospital Saturday. We hope to see him out around again in the near future. Mr. and Mrs. Borden Smyth visited ' over the weekend with her sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Chas MacKinnon and with nieces and nephews Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fitzgerald and son and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Somerton and daughter in Scarborough. Mrs. Fred Cunnington accompanied Mrs. Paul Klemke and daughter Joan and Jean to Niagara FallS where they spent an en- joyable few days over the weekend. Sunday guests with Mr. and Mrs. Richard it'sa 'go in Stephen By C.YNNE FARQUHAR All four of our grant ap- plications have been ac- cepted so it looks like "all systems are go" in Stephen. Township this summer. Four students will be hired again this year to operate S.P.A.R.K. (Special Programs and Recreation for Kids) in Huron. Park. The playground program will be for youngsters aged 442. Pashwood will also be having a playground program this summer at the pavillion in Dashwood Community Park. This program is also for youngsters aged 4-12 and three people will be hired on the project. An extra person will be added to the roster at the Huron Park pool. Four people will be responsible for providing a swim program for Stephen residents. A new project will be undertaken this summer at Crediton ball park. A creative play area will be designed and constructed for youngsters who like to climb, swing and slide. We will be looking for materials to go into the building of the play area so if you have any of the following, or know where we can get these please call 228- 6302. Materials needed in- clude old tires, hydro poles and spools, barn beams and sewer pipes. Shoebottom and family were Mrs. John Thomas and Scott, Belmont and Miss Mary Shoebottom, London. It was i a birthday celebration for Bradley Shoebottom. Mrs. Elmer Archibald, Truro, Nova Scotia is a guest at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Borden Smyth. HELEN MULLER ATHLETICS Helen comes from R.R. # 1, Crediton and is the daughter of Bill and Mary Muller. Helen has been actively in- volved in many sports at school and was the energetic Athletic Representative on last year's Student Council.
