A let was said about a. lot,
Thursday evening in Hen -
sail. The piece of land
located behind the Hensall
BP Icebox and Variety
Store, is owned Bob Erb, who
has requested the land be
zoned frbm residential to
commercial,
Mr. Erb, who owns the BP
station in front, told Hensall
council he needed the lot
change for his business.
"I feel I need it for my
business and with my
business," said Mr, Erb, who
told council he has no Im-
mediate plans for the lot, but
was thinking of using it for a
used car dealership,
"The lot has been an
eyesore for years, I would
just like to clean it up;" he
added.
Later, when the floor was
opened for questions or
comments, Terry Haugh of
69 Queen St, in Hensall,
asked Huron County planner
Roman Dzus, to read a
petition sent to council
March 20. Signed by Mr.
Haugh and five other neigh-
bouring residents the
petition included complaints
of side streets in Hensall
becoming commercial and
the resulting decrease in
area property values.
"I think there is enough
commercial property around
without taking up a side
street," said Mr. Haugh.
,At present, Mr. Erb has
been parking cars on the lot
until council makes a
decision.
Reeve Harold Knight, told
residents that council did not
have the authority to tell Mr.
Erb he could not park cars
on his lot.
"Whether that land is
designated residential or
designated commercial, we
can't stop Bob Erb from
parking cars on it," he said.
When Mr. Haugh ex-
pressed concern to council
that the land, presently
planned for a car dealership,
could be used for a car
wreckers in a feW years,
Reeve Knight told residents
restrictions could be made in
the zoning by-law.
"Council does not have a
lot of control over the land
use, but there are some
stipulations, that could be
made so that residents would
have some control," said.
The life history of Mrs.
Sara Simpson,, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. David McCloy,
Pioneer settlers in this area
was given by Mrs. Sam
Rannie at the Tweedsmuir
History and Guest Night at
the Herisall Women's
Institute at the Hensall
United church on Wed-
nesday. Mrs. Simpson, who
passed away just last
February, was well known
as a public school teacher at
the No. 10 Tuckersmith and
No. 13 McKillop schools; she
also taught at Mission
schools in Toronto.
Visiting as honourd guests
were the leaders and mem-
bers of the past 4-H clubs
who displayed their out-
standing projects and put on
an interesting skit that had
been prepared for
Achievement Day.
Gifts were given to the
leaders Mrs. Joyce Pepper,
Marilyn Pepper, Mrs. Diane
Gerstenkorn, Mrs. Belva
Fuss, Mrs. Nancy McNabb
and Mrs. Trudy Ferguson.
Trudy was also honoured for
receiving her advanced
honours.
Receiving provincial
honours, was Sandra Nixon,
and Linda Roberts, while
Sandra McKay, Joanne
Pepper, Joanne Smale and
Linda Zwaan have received
County Honours.
The roll call was answered
by 18 members naming a
previous owner of their
home. 19 visitors were
present. Arrabgements were
made for gifts at the bir-
thday party at Huronview in
June 25 and Mrs. Elsie
Reeve Knight.
To date, council has not
made a decision on the land
use change request. Clerk
Elizabeth Olce said some
decision should be made by
the next council meeting
Carlile and Mrs. Pearl
Koehler were appointed to
arrange the programme,
It was decided that Mrs,
Koehler, Mrs. Sam Rennie
and Mrs. T. Sherritt would
be car pool captains to see
that members got a ride to
meetings when needed and
Mrs. Rannie and Mrs. John
Skea would visit any sick
members for the coming
month until the next
meeting.
The district bus trip to
