A large majority of area baseball fans continue to
be disbelievers as far as the Toronto Blue Jays are
concerned.
While admitting to be an eternal optimist this
writer is confident the Toronto club will continue some
of their early form and while maybe not-hang on to be
contender for the American league eastern, division
charnpionship, at least be respectable,
This optimism is certainly strengthened after see-
ing the Blue Jays in action in Tuesday's rain shortened
contest against the Seattle Mariners.
When the rains came the Blue Jays were leading 4-
0 and had already chased Rick Honeycutt who at the
time was tied with Tommy John of the Yankees with
six wins and no losses.
Honeycutt was tagged for eight hits in less than
three innnings, but, the weatherman helped preserve
his perfect record.
The big difference this year is in the attitude,
enthusiasm and desire of the Jays. Sure, these are
cliches, but, they make the 'difference.
The players this year not only believe in
themselves, but, in each other and it shows on the
field. New manager Bobby Mattick has completely
changed 'game plans from Hartsfield and lets his
players run,
A prime example came in the first inning Tuesday
night when Bob Bailor stole third. He got a tremen-
-dous jump on Honeycutt and was sliding in before
Seattle catcher Larry Cox knew what happened. He
made no attempt to throw to third.
While saving Rick Honeycutt from his first loss,
the postponement probably cost Dave Stieb his fifth
win of the year,
Steib was rolling along nicely, giving up only three
hits in the first four innings. He was helped immensely
by great fielding plays by Bob Bailor and Damaso Gar-
cia.
We picked up an all-star ballot while at CNE
Stadium. Two Blue Jays are listed, They are John
Mayberry and Elfredo Griffin.
The six Detroit Tigers up for all star recognition
are Jason Thompson, Lou Whitaker, Richie Hebner,
Lance Parrish. Steve Kemp and Allan Trammell.
The Blue Jays suffered a slight setback Wednes-
day night, but. from then on were in terrific form as
they beat Seattle and Oakland by identical 1-0 scores,
lost 4-2 to the A's in 14 innings and then swamped Bill
Martin's team 12-1, Sunday.
Bobby Mattick made a classic remark after Sun-
day's game. He said, "I'm glad the Yankees are win-
ning, too. We wouldn't want to be too far ahead of them
when they come in for a three game series later this
week.
Clinton racing again
Harness racing which has proved very popular in
Clinton through the summer months for a number of
years will continue again this year.
The first day of racing will be Sunday afternoon,
June 29 and will continue for the next 14 weeks through
to September 28.
The race meet is again sponsored by the Clinton
Kinsmen club and a new secretary has been appointed.
He is Dan Donnelly of Goderich, a very enthusiastic
racing official.
A number of stake races 'are being planned in-
cluding the Ontario Harness Horse Stakes for four
year-olds and the Trillium Series for fillies.
Golfing to Wales
One of Western Ontario's amateur golfers will be
off to theBritish Isles in the near future to compete in
one of the world's top tournaments.
He is Ken Doig of Seaforth who was also well
known for his hockey playing ability over the past 25
years or so. Doig was a one-time member of the Ex-
eter Mohawks when they played in OHA senior' and in-
termediate "A" ranks,
Doig will be joining three other Ontario golfers
when they participate in the prestigious tournament in
Porthcawl in southern Wales.
The other Ontarioites are Shane Randall of Peter-
borough and John Nash Jr. and Don White, both from
London.
Ken Doig was a member of the Ontario Willingdon
Cup team which won the Canadian championship in
1974 and also a member of the Canadian Eisenhower
trophy team.
Doig's hockey career was responsible for getting
him started in the golf game. He started taking to the
green when playing hockey in Scotland in the late
1940's. Best of luck, Ken as you take part in the
amateur championship of the world.
Off to Quebec
When this issue hits the street Thursday morning,
we expect to be well on the way on a four day visit to
Quebec City and Montreal.
The Montreal part of the tour will include a visit to
Olympic Stadium. but, the Expos are idle that day.
