That is the way Centralia area farmer Rene Van- Bruwaene described his selected plot of Mingo barley seed. Van Bruwaene is one of two area farmers growing the newly developed barley seedin a selected plot for Stewart's of Ailsa Craig, a division of Ciba-Geigy. A. selected plot consists of only 2,3 acres under regulations set down by the Canadian Seed Growers Association. In addition to the select plot, Van Bruwaene will be growing 30 acres of Mingo barley this year also under contract to Stewarts. Production last year hit 105 bushels per acre. The land of Van Bruwaene's Lot 5, Concession 1 Biddulph township farni0.s light .to medium clayloani Whin is ideal for barley: Rene has been a select grower for the past 10 years and has won prizes for his barley seed at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. His son Mark has also been a winner with the same seed at Exeter Fair, Seed from the 1979 Van Bruwaene barley fields are being sown now for seed stock in 1981. In addition to the some 32 acres planted in Mingo barley, Van Bruwaene has 16 acres in early turnips which are already up and expects to plant another 50 acres in white beans. Beans, turnips and barley are ideal crops for rotation according to Van Bruwaene. II6 -allilail;'"Corti throws a rotation system out." ' He predicted that seed corn would also be grown in this area in the near future. The Van Bruwaene farm operation is a family affair with his wife, the former Monique Kints and daughter Nancy and son .Mark assisting. Nancy, a grade 10 student at South Huron District High School is the tractor driver for the turnip operation. Her father continued, "You need three people for turnips and a very careful and straight" driver and Nancy is just' that.'" Nancy also is a talented musician, playing accordion, piano'and guitar. Mark is in grade three at Precious Blood Separate School in Exeter. DON'T FORGET TO BITER OUR CONTEST-SEE TOP CORNER OF THIS PAGE
