School Science Fair.T-A photo Corn rootworm By Mike Miller and Pat Lynch The number one corn insect in Ontario is the corn rootworm. Every year, Ontario farmers spend in excess of 2 million dollars for insecticides to combat this insect. The amount of damage that this insect does has been assessed at many times the amount spent on control. This is because of improper application of insecticide, as, well as the insects' ability to evade our control techniques. Bernard Smith from Canada Dept. of Agriculture in Harrow, admitted that some years we only get 60 percent control of this insect when insecticides are ap- plied. To make things worse, the Western Corn Rootworm is increasing in numbers. It is even more aggressive than the Northern Corn Root- worm, which we have been fighting for many years. The rootworm insecticide must be applied ilia six inch band over the corn row, This band assures that a large portion of the root zone is treated. I attended a corn planter clinic this past month. I was surprised to see a new planter on display with no bander attached to the end of the insecticide tube. At noon hour I talked to one other farmer, who said the banders fell off his planter and he never replaced them. The insecticide was drib- bling on in a one inch band over the seed. This is not good enough, since a large portion • of the root zone would not be treated. It is also advisable to have the insecticide mixed shallowly into the 114 inch of soil. If the insecticide is applied in front of a press wheel, this mixing is FETTES TOURS AND TRAVEL TOLEDO *Westgate Dinner Theatre *Dinner At The Top Of The Tower *One Coditinental Breakfast *Shopping At Southwyck Mall •Libby Glass Discount Store •2' nights-3 days 40 1'19.00 Twin Per Person • Departs-May 30 FRANKENMUTH •Bavarian Folk Festival •Giant Parade-Bands Floats •1 night-2 days 0 69.50 twin per person •Departs-June 7 TOWNSHIP OF USBORNE .1979 Financial Highlights MILL RATES Average Current and Previous Year's Mill Rates Township Purposes County Purposes School Board Purposes Total 1979 Residential & Farm 49.071 18.749 71.963 139.783 1978 Commercial Residential Commercial & Industrial & Farm & Industrial 57.731 40.477 36.759 22.058 20.135 21,669 79.959 65.392 68.864 159.748 126.004 143.965 Selves opened the meeting with a poem on Easter and a message on Easter, Mrs. Al Eveleigh read the scripture and Mrs. Selves closed the worship service with the poem "If Jesus came to your house," and prayer. PHONE 235-0141 By MRS. HAROLD DAVIS KIRKTON The Reverend Greg Smith was formally inducted as the new rector of the Anglican parishes of St. Paul's, Kirkton, St. Thomas', Granton and St, Patrick's, Saintsbury Sunday evening, in the parish church in Kirkton, Members of the three congregations com- bined to take part in readings for the service and in the reception following in the parish hall. Officiating at the Induction was the Archdeacon Cyril Ladds from St. John the Evangelist Church, Kit- chener and the homily was preached by the Rev, John Spencer, now of St. Mark's Church, Brantford. Guests at the service were members of the clergy from the deaneries of Perth and Waterloo, the Rev. Camillia LaRouc he of Kirkton - Woodham United Church, members of St, John the Evangelist Church, London from which Mr. Smith along with his wife Maureen and son Andrew have come to Kirkton, members ,of the congregation of Holy Trinity Chupch, Lucan which is Mrs. Smith's home, and the families of both the rector and his wife from London and Lucan. Kirkton U.C,W. met in the United Church for their April meeting. Mrs. Wallace generally sufficient. However, 'with planters similar to the Max-Emerge, some type of chain or finger harrow should be used to shallowly incorporate the chemical. It is suggested that you switch insecticide classes every two years. This is because some people fear that rootworms may develop a resistance to one type of rootworm insecticide. However, resistance to the recommended rootworm insecticide has not been proven. If you do switch, switch to another class of insecticide. Thel'e are only two classes of rootworm insecticides. Furadan is in one class. The rest of the insecticides are in the other class. Finally, insecticides do not have to be applied to first year corn. The adult root- worm only lays its eggs at the base of the corn plant. If there was no corn in a field last year, there are no eggs there this spring, thus no reason to treat that field. That makes crop rotation the most effective method of rootworm control. Remember to handle rootworm insecticides with extreme caution.
