six years and according to
Lynne, "Iris Marshall was
there before I was."
In addition to a full
schedule in the Ontario
senior ladies fastball league
which also includes two New
York state teams, the Suns
participate in a number of
tournaments throughout the
summer.
This year the Milverton
girls team is sponsoring the
first International Softball
Classic. It will be held On
June 13, 14 and 15 and will
feature two divisions. They
will be for senior ladies and
intermediate men.
The trophy awards are
being presented by Molson's.

Games will be played on two
diamonds in Milverton and
one each in Newton and
Rostock.
'Other teams in the senior
ladies regular league play
are from, Fort Erie, Kit-
chener, Willowdale, Agin-
court, Burlington and
Buffalo and Tonawanda,
New York.
The Ontario elimination
playoffs to decide a
representative for the
Canada championships will
be held in Kitchener July 25,
26, 27.
According to Lynne
Farquhar, "That's a
biggie."
The Suns are out in the'sun
this week.
The Milverton Suns, one of
the top ladies fastball teams
in Canada left Sunday
morning for a seven day
spring training camp in
Florida.
Included in the 22 member
roster taken south by coach
George Wicke are Lynne
Farquhar of Exeter and
.former area native Iris
Marshall, now of Toronto.
The Suns have represented
Ontario in Canada cham-
pionships on several oc-
casions in recent years and
won the title in 1978.
Lynne Farquhar has been
with the Milverton team for
Soccer club
needs coaches
The Exeter Centennial
soccer club has the game
arranged for about 120 area
youngsters. But some help is
needed.
Local soccer begins in
early May, and continues
through the summer.
Ron Helm, the club's
immediate past' president,
says the organization is
looking for 'coaches and
referees for minor-level
teams.
"Former players, or
anybody with a definite
interest in the game would
be ideal," he said. The job of
either coaching or
refereeing, he explained,
involved a couple of hours of
evening work each week. He
added that the club would
also welcome offers from
people to serve in executive
capacities.
Volunteers are asked to
call either Ron Helm,at 235-
2644; or Martin DeBruyn at
234-6798.
The Centennial soccer club
sponsored teams in four
minor divisions: Squirts,
aged 8 to 10; Atoms, 10 to 12;
Mosquitoes, 12 to 14; and
Pee-Wees, aged 14 to 16.
These youngsters play in the
Lucan and District Minor
Soccer League. They
compete with teams from
Nairn, St. Marys, Taxan-
dria, Lucan, Forest and
Ilderton.
A senior team, the Exeter
Centennials, is part of the
Ausable District Soccer
Association.

We may not have many more chances to exalt about
the Toronto Blue Jays this year so we will take this op-
portunity.
All during the winter and spring months we have
been trying without much success to convince some of
Our baseball acquaintances that the Blue Jays will be
much improved.
We were laughed at only three weeks ago when
predicting the Blue Jays will Win at least 75 games and
be better at the finish than three or possibly four other
major league teams.
It may be the only time this season, but for 48 hours
on the weekend the Toronto club was in first place in
the American league east.
We mentioned recently that the Jays were better
because of their youthful hustle and manager Bobby
Mattick's decision to take advantage of speed on the
bases.
Another decided improvement is the increase in the
number of complete games by Toronto pichers. Dave
Steib already has three full nine inning performances.
Saturday, Steib shut-out the Milwaukee Brewers. It
was the first time that the Milwaukee team has failed
to score any runs on their home field in 120 games
since August 6, 1978.
Sunday, Paul Mirabella was on the way to a second
complete game leading 6-0 when he ran into a shoulder
problem, with relief help from Baylor Moore, the Jays
were able to chalk up their eighth win of the season.
Local Canoeists
At least two area residents participated in the recent
annual conoe race from St. Marys to Fanshawe Park
with all proceeds going to help crippled children.
Ken • Baker of Exeter and Fred Gielnik from
Dashwood, both employees of Veterinary Services of
Centralia College completed the courae and raised $120
in pledges.
A Ball in Florida
A lucky couple will be spending two weeks in Florida
early in 1981 thanks to a project being organized by the
Exeter and district men's recreation fastball league.
The 10 teams in the rec ball loop under the organiza-
tion of treasurer Jim De Block will be attempting to
sell 5,000 tickets throughout the summer months.
The big prize for the lucky ticket drawn at the
league's closing banquet in the fall will be "A Ball in
Florida Trip" valued at $4,000
The objective of the draw is to raise money for
development of Exeter and district recreation
grounds. This appears to be a very worthy project with
proceeds going to a good and needy cause. Get your
tickets early from rec league players.
Plan Soccer Season
The Exeter Centennial soccer club is getting set to
start another season of play on the senior level and for
four minor age teams.
The minor clubs are squirts, atoms, mosquitoes and
pee wees. They play in the Lucan and district minor
soccer leagues along with teams from Nairn, Lucan,
Ilderton, St. Marys, Taxandria and Forest.
On the local scene coaches-and referees are needed
at the minor level. Anyone wishing to lend his time and
knowledge is asked to call Ron Helm at 235-2644 or
Martin DeBruyn at 234-6798.
The Exeter Centennials senior soccer team is again
entered in the Ausable District Soccer Association and
the 1980 schedule is expected to be released shortly.
• More Spring Training
While the major league baseball teams have moved
north and into their regular schedules spring training
continues for another ball club.
Lynne Farquhar was in the office Friday afternoon
and we learned she was leaving Sunday with the
Milverton Suns ladies fastball team for a week-long
stint in the sunny south of Florida.
While in Florida, the Suns will be playing a number
of exhibition games in preparation for their Ontario
Senior ladies softball league play.
The Suns who have won the Canadian ladies cham-
pionship in recent years will be entered in the Ontario
eliminations in Kitchener in late July. As Lynne said,
"That's a biggie."
Another area native, Iris Marshall formerly of
Kirkton and now a medical doctor in Toronto has been
with the Suns for a number of years. This will be Lynne
Farquhar's sixth year with the Milverton club.
To Ontario Finals
Athletes at South Huron District High School have
turned in excellent performances in two sports in re-
cent weeks which have qualified them for the all-
Ontario championships.
In senior badminton, Ronalee and Dave Bogart won
the WOSSA mixed doubles championship without a
loss and were at Seneca College in Toronto over the
weekend participating in the OFSA playoffs. Coach
Pat Rowe said they finished 12th in their division of 34
competitors.
The junior WOSSA championships are being held
this week and South Huron is being represerted girls
doubles by Maja Gans and Laurie Brand who won the
Huron-Perth title and Leslie Hunter-Duvar and John
McAllister who were second in mixed doubles.
In gymnastics, Catherine Patterson was second at
WOSSA in two junior events and will be going to
McMaster University in Hamilton this weekend to
compete in the OFSA playdowns,
