The Huron-Perth senior league will get underway with four regular teams and an interlocking schedule with Otir London area junior clubs, The Dashwood Tigers will be back to defend their championship along with the Clinton Colts, Thorndale. Angels and the Thorndale Tycoons, The Crediton 1VIets in the league for a couple of years will not be back. Dashwood and Clinton will meet in a double home and home series while they will each meet the two Thorndale clubs in a single home and home set. Similarily the four Huron- Perth clubs will take on the London junior teams on 4 one game at home and one away basis. The four junior clubs will be from Dorchester, Byron, St. Thomas and one London club playing out of Labatt Park. In addition to regular league play, the Dashwood Tigers will play a home and home exhibition series with the Walsingham seniors and are entered in three senior tournaments. The tournaments are in Tillsonburg June 7,8 and 9; Kincardine July 12 and 13 and Petrolia over the Civic Holiday weekend. Bob Hoffman of Dashwood is back as president of the Huron-Perth league, Dave ' Dawson of Thorndale is the vice-president and John Livermore is the secretary- treasurer. Livermore of Clinton has held that position for.close to 40 years. The Dashwood Tigers have called their first practice for this coming Sunday af- ternoon at 2 p.m. at the Dashwood ball park. Manager-coach Joe Fulop will welcome any new Huron-Perth ball to start IS. IT AN ADVANTAGE? Throughout the years a favorite theory in most Sports is that a team playing at home has a good ad- vantage and this has held good in many instances. The theory suggests a baseball team playing on their home field should score at least one more run in any particular situation at home than they would on the road. The same applied to a hockey team with a cheer- ing crowd behind them would score at least an extra goal. But, it sure hasn't held up this year in at least two particular playoff series. The first indication of reversal of this theory this year came in the recent Allan Cup playoff series between the Petrolia Squires and the Cambridge Hornets. Petrolia won the flip of the coin to gain home ice for the seventh and deciding game and should have won the odd contest in such a tight series. They didn't win the seventh game, in fact, neither team was able to win on home ice. Here was a case where the visiting team was the winner each time. The same situation seems to be existing in the Stanley Cup playoff set between the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota North Stars. In the first four games, the home team failed to win. But, this should change Tuesday night when Mon- treal gets back to the Forum. A couple of weeks ago we called the Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres to meet in the Stanley Cup final. That can't happen now. If the Canadiens get by Minnesota and they likely will, they will tackle the Sabres in the semi finals. More Exciting They may not be a pennant contender for a couple of years. but. the Toronto Blue Jays will be providing much more exciting action for their fans this summer. They may falter, but, the Blue Jays have extended their record winning the first game of the season at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto to four. Wednesday, the Blue Jays were very impressive in beating the Milwaukee Brewers 11-2 on opening day. The important factor was holding Milwaukee one of the hardest hitting teams in the American league to only two runs. At this year's local Sportsmen's dinner, Rick Bosseti told us that new manager BobbyMattick was going to emphasize hustle and speed this year. That certainly has shown in the first five games at the time of this writing. In addition to more stealing attempts, the Jays have been very successful with hit and run plays. Actually this procedure should be called. run and hit because the base runner takes off before the pitch gets to the plate. Start of Summer Sports With the only hockey activities still going on being on the national scene, it's time to think about summer sports on the local level. The Huron-Perth senior baseball league and the Southwestern Fastball Association are both ready to roll. The Crediton Mets have folded and some of their players will be moving their allegiance to the Dashwood Tigers as they attempt to retain their Huron-Perth title. The Tigers are holding their first practice this Sun- day afternoon at 2 p.m. and anyone interested in trying out will be more than welcome. The Dashwood club will continue their policy started last year of an exhibition series with Walsingham and participation in three senior tournaments throughout the province. The start of the area fastball league will herald the return of the Lucan Irish. The Lucan club was a strong team in theleague until last year when they moved to a London and district loop. That league will not be in operation this year. The Exeter Saveway team has already started workouts and they will continue each Sunday morning at Exeter community park. The return of the Lucan Irish will renew the keen rivalry with the Saveway team. It will certainly be good for both clubs. Anyone planning on participating in slo-pitch in Dashwood this summer is reminded of the deadline of May 1 for registration at any of the three general stores in the village. New From Florida While talking to Bob Hoffman of Dashwood about the upcoming Huron-Perth baseball season Sunday even- ing, he told us about his recent trip to Florida. Hoffman, who has been a New York Yankee fan for quite some time was fortunate enough to stay in the same hotel in Florida as the Yankees. . During his stay at the hotel he was able to talk to a few of the Yankees including Rick Cerone, coaches Dick Hauser and Whitey Ford and general manager Gene Michaels. Cerone remembered attending the Exeter Sportsmen's dinner while a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. Hoffman said the best two hitters he saw in spring training were Al Oliver of Texas and George Brett of Kansas City. He was really impressed with the speed on the bases of Willie Wilson of Kansas City. Baseball Trivia A little baseball trivia to take your mind off the Stanley Cup playoffs for a minute or two. Who is the only pitcher in the American league to throw against Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle during his career? It was Al Benton of the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox. Who are the four American league players who had their careers reach over four decades? How about Ted Williams, Mickey Vernon, Minnie Minoso and Early Wynn.
