If it's any consolation
migraine sufferers who are
trying, to sandwich a 'nor-
mal' life between their at-
tacks of head pain, they are
in good company.
Thomas Jefferson,,
General U.S. Grant, Chopin,
Charles Darwin, St, Luke,
Madame de Pompadour,
John Calvin, Tolstoi and
Virginia Woolf are known to
have suffered from
migraines.
Researchers further
contend the visions of
William Blake, Lewis
Carroll and St. Theresa
could have had their origins
in the migraine 'aura' - the
warning signs in the pre-
headache stages - that these
people endured.

In spite of a 4,000 year
history and the miracles of
modern sciences, the
migraine, like the common
cold, stubbornly resists
attempts to find a 'cure.'
Until recent years, the
migraine did not receive as
much attention as other
ailments in society. Perhaps
this was because it is not a
fatal disease, although it has
driven some sufferers to
thoughts of suicide,
Now extensive research is
turning up glimmers of hope
for migrainers that they may
at least be able to reduce the
intensity, frequency and
duration of attacks,
The Migraine Association
of Great Britiain established
the Migraine Trust in the
early 1960s for further
research. Clinics are now in
operation in England; for
example, in London suf-
ferers may go to a clinic for
treatment at the outset of an
attack and with prompt
action the majority of cases
are sent home after four
hours.
The American Association
for the Study of Headache
has existed in the United.
States for several years, In
later years, the National
Migraine Association with
headquarters in Chicago,
Illinois, was established to
refer Sufferers to accredited
headache clinics.
A few months ago the CI3C`
daytime program Take
Thirty featured a
representative of The
Canadian Migraine Foun-
dation: 390 Brunswick
Avenue, Toronto, M5R 2Z4.
The Migraine Foundation,
a non-profit organization
supported by private
donations, was founded in
1974 to gather material on
the basic facts about
migraines, to keep up-to-
date files on research fin-
dings, to answer the
questions most frequently
asked by migrainers and to
compile lists of the warning
signs, symptoms and trigger
mechanisms most
frequently noted by
physicians and migraine
sufferers,
This, information is
available free of charge to
migraine sufferers upon
request. In addition, more
technical data for health
care professionals is
available upon request from
physicians.
The. Foundation em-
phasizes migraine should be
diagnosed and treated by a
physician. Many migrainers
are able to cope with the
problem when the doctor
finds the prescription
medication or other therapy
that is, bested, suited to the
individual. Sometimes the
sufferer is referred to a
neurologist with a special
interest in migraine.'
The most helpful step the
individual can take is to try
to determine his or her
personal trigger
mechanisms: that is, what
sets off an attack. The
Foundation stresses the list
of 'triggers' in its in-
formation is to be used not as
a tool for self-diagnoses but
rather as a guideline.
