Holstein dairy cattle
owned by Hern Farms Ltd.
of Usborne township are
among the top herds in
Huron county.
The family partnership of
Harry and Bob Hern was
established in 1971 although
both brothers have been
involved in producing milk
for many years.
Harry said, "The farm on
which I now live and was
formerly my father's has
been producing milk for sale
since 1928."
The milking cows usually
about 65 at one given time
are housed on the Harry
Hern farm while the calves,
heifers and dry cows are
kept at Bob's farm.
In attaining the
recognition as top producers,
the Bern herd has received
the Certificate of Gold Seal
Quality for two years and
they have had the honour of
the top producing cow and
the runnerup with BCA's of
217 and 210, respectively.
Bob Hern explained these
top performances Saying,
"These high producing cows
were bred to Starlite and
Maple Joe."
The Hern's breeding
procedures are a little dif-
ferent than for most dairy
herds, Bob explained, "We
breed our first calf heifers to
a beef bull, usually a Polled
type. The reason is calving is
easier and we have less
problems."
The first calves from all
heifers on the first lactation
are raised and fed for
market while after that the
bulls are marketed while all
heifers are kept for
replacement stock. Bob
Hern added, "We haven't
bought a female in 15 years."
All milk from the Hern
farms is sold under the
provincial quota system with
two divisiions, They are the
Group 1 Quota Pool and the
Market Share Quota, The
1979 production was 1,200,000
pounds of milk. They have a
present production herd
average of 16,500 pounds.
Harry Hern said the dairy
herd is now completely
brucellosis free. All
breeding is done artificially.
The milk is picked up
every second day. Until that
time it is stored in a stainless
steel tank with a capacity of
800 gallons. The present
production is about 3,500
pounds per day.
Despite the increase in
milk and other prices, Bob
Hern maintains, "Milk is
still the cheapest all-round
food you can buy."
• Both Hern brothers and
their families are faithful
supporters of Zion United
Church.
Bob Hern became a 4-H
calf club member in 1946 and
has continued in helping
farm youngsters since that
time. He was president of the
Huron 4-H Leaders
Association in 1977 and last
year was one of five Ontario
4-H leaders to be selected to
attend the first National 4-H
leaders conference.
Before forming the part-
nership with Harry, Bob
spent seven years as
manager of the Jarvis
Hereford Farms. He is
currently vice-president of
the Exeter Agricultural
Society.
