For the second consecutive
years the Zurich, Buckeyes
have emerged as the
champions of the South
Huron Hockey League.
The Buckeyes defeated the
Exeter Mohawks 6-3 Friday
in Exeter to take the best of
seven series in six games,
For the Zurich squad it
was a, total team effort with
all three lines sharing in the • scoring output.
Leading the way for the
Buckeyes who last year
defeated the Goderich
Merchants for the title, Were
Gerald Weido and Mike
Clarke with a pair of goals
each.
Tom Ryan had two
counters to lead the way for
the first year Mohawks,
The Buckeyes applied the
pressure from the opening
whistle with Clarke picking
up the first of his two goals
as the result of a hard slap
shot at the 33 second mark
from just inside the
Mohawks' blueline which
eluded goalie John Hayter.
The Mohawks tied the
game up eight minutes later
when Brion Penhale fired a
back hand shot which went
by Buckeye goalie Randy
Oke. Penhale who had
played defence most of the
year was moved up to right
wing when Brian Taylor one
of the Exeter's top snipers,
could not make the game as
a result of exams at the
University of Western
Ontario.
At the 9:58 mark Exeter
took the lead as a result of
some pretty passing between
Ryan and Barry Baynham.
With Zurich's Steve
Bedour off for interference,
Baynham fed a perfect pass
to Ryan who was left un-
covered to the right of the
Zurich net.
The Buckeyes came back
to tie the game when Weido
picked up an errant Exeter
pass and fired a slap shot
from just inside the
Mohawks' blueline.
Shortly afterwards, the
Buckeyes had a golden
opportunity to go ahead
when on a two on one break
Exeter defender Larry
Mason fell and Zurich's
Richard Schilbe shot over
the net.
Zurich's perSistence paid
off and 'at 17:49 Glen Zirk
shovelled a pass from.
Schilbe to give Zurich a 3-2
lead heading into the
dressing room. Tim. Weft
had the other assist.
The start of the second
period saw a major change
for the Mohawks as they
inserted Randy Lovie bet-
.weep the pipes. Lovie was
picked up by Exeter from the
Grand Bend Colonials for the
playoffs.
Unfortunately for Exeter
the change seemed to make
little difference as once
again, the visiters picked up
the first goal of the period.
Clark's second goal of the
game was almost a carbon
copy of his first as the
rangy defender moved in 10
feet from the Exeter blueline
and let go a slap shot which
ended up in the upper right
hand corner of the net.
The Mohawks then
mounted a sustained attack
of their own with Penhale,
Baynham and Jim Guenther
having good scoring op-
portunities.
The Mohawks finally found
the puck bounce their way
when Ryan scored his second
of the game just after a
penalty to the Buckeyes'
Ron Rader had expired.
Baynham passed to Jeff
Fuller whose shot was,
stopped by Oke but Ryan
who was stationed to the
right of the net banged in the
rebound.
After the goal, the line of
Ryan, Fuller and Ron Moore
continued s to apply pressure
in the Zurich end but some
fine goaltending and
defensive work kept the
Buckevei out of trouble,
At 17:21 Zurich picked up
its fifth goal of the game
when centreman Pat Bedard
spotted Weido unprotected
near Lovie. Weido than
banged the pass into the net
'for the score.
In the final frame, the
'Buckeyes worked to protect
their lead with Zirk almost
adding to the total with 1:29
left on the clock. The stocky
left winger made an end
to end rush and ended up
knocking the Exeter net off
of its moorings. Both Lovie
and Zirk were not hurt on the
play.
In a desperate attempt to
tie the game, the Mohawks
pulled their goalie with the
move resulting in a Zurich
goal.
After ,taking a pass from
John. Graham, Bedard
flipped a shot over Baynham
who was in the Exeter
crease,
When the final buzzer
went, a happy group of
Zurich players descended
upon Oke who had given the
Zurich squad great
goaltending throughout the
series and the regular
season.
After the two teams shook
hands, league president John
Stevens presented the
championship trophy to
team captain Graham,
One of the less pleasant
aspects of the post-game
activities was when several
of the 712 fans began
throwing pop cans and in one
case a bottle on to the ice
surface. No one was injured
when the whiskey bottle
shattered.
Following the game the
Buckeyes and their sup-
porters returned to Zurich
where they' celebrated their
victory.
Buckeyes win at home
On Wednesday the
Buckeyes became the first
team in the series to win a
game on home ice as they
doubled Exeter by the same
6-3 score.
Picking up a pair of goals
FIRE CALL
A fire late Tuesday af-
ternoon in Usborne township
destroyed the interior of
truck owned by a Lucan
man.
Firemen were called to the
scene three miles east of
Exeter when a vehicle
driven by David Green of
Lucan began to smoke.
Green pulled off to the side
of Concesssion four and five
and by the time he had
removed a battery cable, the
interior was engulfed ' by
flames,
By the time firemen
arrived, the interior had
extinguished itself.
Green was not hurt.
for Zurich was Schilbe with
his counters coming in the
first and third periods.
The Mohawks scored the
first goal of the game at the'
ight minute mark when
Guenther took a pass from
Brian Taylor and fired a shot
past Oke.
The. Buckeyes came back
to score three consecutive
goals as Graham, Schilbe
and Bedard found the range.
Desjardine, Clark and
Bedour added the assists.
In the second period, the
Buckeyes .outscored their
opposition 2-1 with Clarke
and Bedour adding to the
Zurich total. Weido and
Rader had the assists.
The lone Mohawk goal of
the period came from the
stick of Moore with help
from Brian Taylor.
The third stanza saw the
teams trade goals with
Schilbe scoring for Zurich
and Bill Van Bergen replying
for Exeter. Zirk and
Nicholson assisted on the
Zurich goal.
