The 1979-80 hockey season on the local front is
quickly coming to, an end and it's also a very
successful conclusion for a number of teams,
Two Ontario Minor Hockey Association cham-
pionships have already been captured by area clubs
and one more is a possibility.
First of all congratulations to the Exeter Kinsmen
midgets for going all the way and winning the OMHA
title in fairly convincing fashion.
These youngsters turned in an excellent brand of
hockey and were ably guided by coach Jack Fuller,
manager Keith Coates and trainer Jack Underwood.
The same type of congratulations goes to the Lucan
pee wees in bringing home the OMHA pee wee "DD"
trophy.
These hard working youngsters certainly deserve
the Ontario championship and gave their fans many
hours of exciting entertainment.
Responsible for the success of the team were
coach Ken Freeman, his assistant Wayne Hall and
manager Reg Crawford. The team received great goal
tending from Doug Haskett and Brent Fowles and we
hear former professional goalie Ted Ouimet had a lot
to do with their fine showing.
The other area team still in contention for provincial
honours is the Ilderton midgets. They meet Havelock
Saturday in the seventh and deciding game.
The South Huron intermediate hockey season end-
ed Friday night when the Zurich Buckeyes defeated
the Exeter Mohawks for the championship.
Executive, teams and players in this league are to
be commended in operating a very successful cam-
paign.
The final series was close with two games going
into overtime and most of the others being decided by
only one goal.
The Buckeyes won the championship for the se-
cond straight year. It was the first year for the
Mohawks and they showed they belong in this type of
competition and will surely be back next year.
Sunday night at the Stephen arena, MacLean's of
Exeter won the first of what is hoped to be the annual
Stephen rec hockey tournament.
In the final game, MacLean's beat the Stephen Op-
timists in an excellent game, Most of the players of the
Optimist are members of the club and they are show-
ing the same type of hustle in providing a much needed
service for the community.
Bob Lawrence of the Optimists called later Sunday
night to ask us to thank Ken Govers and the Hungry
Hollow boys for their hard work in sponsoring the
tourney. MacLean's received the Galloway Farms
trophy.
AlsO on the list of achievements is the winning of
the Exeter and district rec league championship by the
Dashwood Tigers.
Back on the Air
The Toronto Blue Jays are back on the airwaves of
Southwestern Ontario thanks to radio station CHLO is
St. Thomas,
About a month ago CFPL in London announced
they were discontinuing the Blue Jays broadcasts after
three years. One of the reasons given was that the
Toronto club did not spend enough money to get a
better contender for a pennant.
We feel that was a very poor and uncalled for
reason. It's about the same as a CFPL listener saying
the station wasn't spending enough money to get top
notch announcers • and provide the best in entertain-
ment.
The news from St. Thomas was certainly great for
this writer and we hope they do not ever have to regret
this move. In carrying the games this year, CHLO also
gets the first right of refusal for future years which
will likely put CFPL out in the cold.
The London station had said earlier that the aban-
donment of the Jays broadcasts ,was for only one year
and they would take another look at thesituation at the
end of the season. Well it looks as if they won't get that
chance.
Gymnastic champs
Congratulations go out to the South Huron District
High School gymnastic team on an excellent perfor-
mance in the recent Huron-Perth championships in St.
Marys.
Although the local team failed to repeat as overall
thampions, three members of the team did win in-
dividual titles.
Liz Scott of South Huron was the winner in the
senior division, Catherine Patterson wan the junior
category and Helen Muller was the elite section cham-
pion.
Banquet Friday Night
The annual windup banquet of the South Huron
hockey league will be held Friday night at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
Frank Funston, manager of the Stephen township
arena and coach of the Centralia College team tells us
tickets are still available for the dinner and dance.
Anyone wishing tickets should contact Frank
Funston, John Stephens or representatives of any of
the teams.
