"Until we started using SENCOR,
we had a bad problem with velvet-

taken care of our velvetleaf

A new soccer season will
be kicked-off this Saturday
in Grand Bend with a dance.
Soccer association
president Tom Vlemmix
says the highlight of the
dance will be a gathering of
the soccer team of 1953 - the
first team Grand Bend ever
had. Vlemmix says the
soccer club has been in
operation "on and off" since
'53. "There were some slack
years in there," he said.
Vlemmix added that this
year's organization
promises to be the strongest
ever. Instead of just one
team in the Ausable District
Soccer League, there will be
two Grand Bend senior
entries this year. Last year's
league winning "Colonials"
will be back with all the
same players, Vlemmix
said. To accommodate the
younger men who are
coming into senior level, a
second team will be formed,
he explained. The new team
will be sponsored by Sun-
shine Village IGA and
Rombouts Construction.
Vlemmix said that plans
are already in the making
for a bus trip to Toronto to
see the professional Bliz-
zards play.
player, you want to watch
your player to see if he gets
the puck past their goalie.
Soon the agony was over.
We lost. Two of their players
succeeded in the shoot-out,
while only one of ours made
it.
Believe me, after those
three hard-fought games, the
smell of "Absorbine Junior"
was strong in our house.
Finally, no more trips to
the arena. The hockey
season has ended just in time
for us to stay home and
watch the NHL play-offs on
television.

The guys want to make
sure they put back on any
weight they may have lost

The curling season has
closed, too. We've nearly
severed all connections with
the local arenas.
This Saturday we have a
banquet and dance to wrap
up the curling season in
Thedford.
Unfortunately, that is the
very night that the local
soccer club is having a dance
to kick off their season in
Grand Bend.
We're into the season of
overlapping sports.

The letter from the Grand

asked that the village not

Remember three weeks
ago when I said that if my
favourite team won that
night, I wouldn't have to
make any more trips to the
arena to watch , hockeY
games
As they say on the Tonight
Show, "Wrong again; hockey
sox breath!"
They didn't win. But they
didn't lose, either. The play-
off game ended in a tie, and
because it was i after mid-
night, there was no time for
overtime.
Can you imagine what
would happen if the Montreal
Canadiens tied a play-off '
game, but they couldn't play
over-time because the man
who runs the Zamboni at the
forum was tired, and wanted
to go home to bed?
The next day, however, we
learned that we had won the
league championship',
because the opposition had
dumped their regular goalie
and was disqualified for
bringing in an ace.
Somehow, winning that way
takes the joy out of victory. I
thought I was finished with
trips to the arena.
Wrong again, broken stick
' breath.
Number eleven, (also
known as my husband and
favourite player) informed
the that the team was en=
tered in a tournament at the
Forest Arena the following
weekend.
It was a "no hit" tour-
nament and teams came
from all over -- plates such
as Goderich, Seaforth,
Sarnia, and points in bet-
ween, including Arkona
Even Grand Bend entered a
team, but I don't think their
sponsors, Thompson-War-
ner, will mind if I leave out
their scores.
Believe it or not, the
players abided by the no-hit,
no slap-shot rulings, and
play was surprisingly
sportsmanlike.
The team I was cheering
for -- the Arkona "A"s,
played their first game
Friday night. They lost by
one point, even though my
favourite player had two
goals and an assist in his best
game of the season.
We thought we had the
consolation prize wrapped
up when we won Saturday's
game. Actually all it meant
was that we had to be at the
arena at 8:30 Sunday mor-
ning.
I guess the boys weren't
quite awake, because they
let the game end in a tie
score. Because of tight
scheduling, the win had to be
decided by a "shoot-out".
Never have the nerves of
fans been so taxed.
Three sharp-shooters were
chosen from each team
When the first two went in on
the opposing goalies, the
fans didn't know where to
look. You want to watch your
goalie to see if he stops their
Molsons Breweries will be
the official thirst-quenchers
at Grand. Bend's Burgerfest
this summer. Chamber of
commerce secretary-ma-
nager Bob Simpson said his
group decided to go with
Molsons because they gave
the chamber a better offer
than other breweries,
Simpson said that Molsons
is providing the chamber
with funds and services
equal to about $2,000.
Molsons has promised to
provide the Burgerfest with
a large truck with built-in
coolers, for serving draft
beer. They will be putting up
500 posters advertising
Burgerfest all over south
western Ontario.
Molsons have offered the
chamber 25,000 disposible
beer glasses, and the use of
their mobile unit complete
with a sound system. They
are giving the chamber $500
to spend on prize money for
the adults in the various
competitions. They are not
allowed to give money for
prizes for children under the
age of majority.
Molsons has also agreed to
pay sky divers to drop during
the Burgerfest activities.
"We're more than im-
pressed with their eagerness
to help", Simpson said.
Representatives from
Molson, Dennis Riggins and
Earnie Charette, attended
an executive meeting of the
chamber where the deal was
made.
Burgerfest will be held the
weekend of June 13,
