The purchase of a col'Ony
house and 300 turkey poults
in 1948 was the beginning of
one of the largest turkey
operations in this part of
Ontario,
Harry Hayter of Hayter
Turkey Farms of Dashwood
now has a basic quota from
the Ontario Turkey
Marketing Board and the
Federal Agency of 1,200,000
pounds annually.
Hayter said this week, "I
bought a colony house from
Edna Willert in 1948 and
started I with 300 turkeys.
About half of my first flock.
died with blackhead."
He expanded the business
in 1952, went with a major
building Twansion in 1962
and completed another
building program five years
later,
Although Hayter has a
1,200,000 pounds quota he is
only allowed to sell 68 per
cent of this amount this year.
In 1979 the figure was 74 per
cent. •
Hayter.continued, "The
quota figure is set by supply.
There are apparently an
excessive number of birds in
storage and the board in its
wisdom decided to cut
back."
Asked what happens if an
individual producer's quota
is surpassed? Hayter
replied, "There is a severe
penalty if we go over quota.
An extra 10 cents per pound
goes to the marketing board
and the producer's quota for
the following year is cut by
10 percent."
The normal fee from
turkey producers is three-
eights of one cent per pound
to the OntaCio. Board and
about one-third Qf one per-
cent per pound goes to' the
federal agency.
Due to the decrease in
quota, the Hayter flocks this
year will be cut to between
v,
40,000 and 45,000 birds. The
poults are purchased at
three different times, in
early February, May and
July. He currently has 12,000
poults about nine weeks old.
Ontario with 145 producers
has 45 percent of the
Canadian turkey market.
The hen turkeys are
usually marketed at 17-18
weeks and weigh about 16
pounds. The toms are sold at
20-21 weeks and weigh
around 26 pounds, Most of
the Hayter birds are pur-
chased by Canada Packers,
He does market sortie birds
locally at Thamksgiving and
Christmas to individual
customers.
The turkey poults are
purchased day old from
Cuddy, Farms at Strathroy
and Cold Springs at
Thamesford. They are of the
Nicholas breed.
