OY JOY SCHEIFELE
At its meeting held March
27th the Ailsa Craig Business
Association elected Merlon
Bender as President. Other
executive committee
members. include Vice
President, Don Robinson and
secretary-treasurer, Don
McLeod.
For the past 16 yrs
Merlon Bender has been an
active businessman in the
community as a distributor
for Bordens Milk. Ten years
ago he opened the Pinecrest
Variety on Main Street
which he has enlarged over
the years and recently *ex-
panded to open a new variety
store in Creditors.
With the recent closing of
two businesses in Ailsa Craig
he is deeply concerned about
the loss of employment for
local persons and is eager to
have the business com-
munity help to attract new
business and industry into
the village.
"Contrary to what has
been reported publicly
recently", he stressed "I feel
that severs and water
supply alone are not going to
bring new business into
Craig. We have to take the
initiative and seek out
persons and attract them to
the area." This he feels is the
responsibility of all con-
cerned.
"We are 'open to
suggestions from villagers
for any improvements or
needs", he emphasized.
The Business Association
will be meeting regularly the
third Thursday of each
month at the Board Room at
Craigholme Nursing Home
and business people and
those involved in cottage
industries are indeed urged
to attend the meetings.
Each year the Association
has supported the Gala Day
events and Santa Claus
parade, as well as putting on
community breakfasts for
special events. "We expect
to continue to meet these
needs", reported Mr.
Bender.
Born in Tavistock,
Ontario, he worked for
severalyears for the Baden
Cheese Co. before coming to
this area. He is married, and
has two children, Becky,
aged 16 and Bradley, aged
10,
