Area hockey fans could see
history in the making at the
South Huron rec centre,
tonight, when the Exeter
midgets tackle Bradford in
the fifth game of their OIVIHA
final.
If the locals win, it would
give them the series by a 4-1
count and Mark the first
presentation of an Ontario
Championship trophy in the
new rec centre. Game time
is 8:00 p.m.
The locals split a pair of
games with. Bradford this
weekend, suffering a 6.4 loss
on home ice, Friday, but
taking a stranglehold on the
championship with a hard-
fought 5-3 win in Bradford
Sunday night.
If a sixth game is needed,
it will be played in Bradford
on Friday and the seventh is
scheduled for the rec centre
on Sunday.
A midget win would give
Exeter its fifth Ontario title
since 1972 when the Exeter
Hawks brought home the
silverware. They duplicated
the feat in 1977. The local pee
wees won in 1973 and the
same team members
brought home the bantam
trophy in 1975.
Only one of those four
other trophies was presented
on Exeter ice, that being the
bantam win in the old arena
in 1975.
"If we play hockey we
should be able to wrari it up,"
NOT THIS TIME — Bradford's John,Kovacs had an excellent scoring opportunity in Friday's midget game at the rec centre,
but netminder Rich Fletcher was equal to the task as he came up with a spectacular leg save on the play. Moving into help
are Exeter players Jamie Chaffe, Bill Renning and Rick Lindenfield. Staff photo

WAS left alone to handle the
Bradford offence on several
occasions and on most of the
six tallies, he made one or
two saves before he suc-
cumbed to the pressure.
It wasn't until the third
period that Exeter started to
skate and check as they had
done in their first two wins.
Captain Mike McGuigan,
who sat out the first game of
the series through a
suspension, paced the
visitors in their attack as he
potted three goals.
The Exeter scoring was
handled by Dave Shaw, Mike
Murray, Dave Jackson and
Rick Lindenfield. Shaw also
added a pair of assists and
singles were recorded by
Lindenfield, Jackson,

, Put it together
The locals gave coach
Fuller and their supporters
some anxious moments
when they started out in low„
gear again in Sunday's
game, but they started
putting their winning for-
mula together in the final
stages of the first period and
kept it going to win by the 5-3
margin.
Bradford took a 1-0 lead
and held on to it until the
18.35 mark of the first when
Dave Underwood scored the
first of his three on a play
with linemates Mike Clark
and Mike Murray.
Rick Lindenfield then
scored with nine seconds left
to give Exeter a lead they
never relinquished. Lin-
denfield took passes from
Pete Tuckey and Jim Lovie
and then skated around one
defender and blasted a shot
to the top corner.
Underwood scored the only
tally of the middle frame to
give Exeter a 3-1 margin
when he fired a hard slap
shot from just inside the
blueline on a play with Clark.
Bradford whittled the lead
to one goal early in the third
and Underwood got that one
back at the 13.37 mark on a
play with Murray when he
wheeled'and found the mark
'on what appeared to be an
almost impossible angle at
the side of the net.
The home team again
narrowed the margin to one
with about five minutes left
and almost tied the. game in

The Exeter rodeo is beginning to be something like
a cat that has nine lives,
The rodeo was pronounced dead after its 1977 per-
formance. Several weeks ago it appeared to be ready
to be revived but a meeting Tuesday night of rodeo
association directors did not show enough interest.
They met with Doug Andrews of High Country
Rodeo Company but turned down a very enticing offer
to revive the rodeo.
That was about 10 p.m. Tuesday evening. A couple
of hours later Andrews had been introduced to Bill
McGrath of the Stephen Optimist club.
For the next three days and nights McGrath who is
past president of the Optimists and current president
Bob Pinter did a lot if investigating in hopes of their
club taking over sponsorship of the rodeo.
Those hopes were fulfilled Saturday afternoon
when a`contract was signed with Doug Andrews for the
1980 rodeo to be held on July 19 and 20.
For this year the rodeo will continue to be called
the Exeter rodeo. It will be sponsored by the Stephen.
Optimists and held at Huron Park on the grounds own-
ed by the Exeter Saddle club.
It was with mixed emotion that most members of
the former Exeter rodeo committee turned down the
offer Tuesday night.
Secretary Jack Malone said he was very disap-
pointed that only 11 persons showed up. Malone had
sent out 36 invitations to the meeting. He added, "This
clearly shows there is very little interest."
Rodeo president Dalt Finkbeiner agreed saying,
"Here we are the same group of people that decided in
1977 to quit and we don't seem to have any more in-
terest, maybe not as much."
Most in attendance agreed that the proposal put
forth by Doug Andrews was satisfactory, but, the man-
power to carry out the event was not in evidence.
In addition, the former rodeo directors felt they
had no objective to give them the stimulus to sponsor
such a large event.
As one said, "What would we do with the money if
we made any. We have no goals. A service club would
have."
At Saturday's meeting with Andrews and the
Stephen Optimists a question was asked if any of the
service clubs in Exeter were interested.
The reply was that all had representatives on the
rodeo committee and have showed no interest since
the last event.
Through the co-operation of Molson's and High
Country Rodeo the 1980 Ontario rodeo circuit will be
the largest ever. Doug Andrews is supplying the full
rodeo package for 19 sites in addition to the local one.
The same rodeo and its top notch performers and
riders that is coming here will be providing the grands-
tand shows at the Western Fair in London for two days
and four days at the Canadian National Exhibition in
Toronto.
Dashwood ball
Plans are being made for another season of slo
pitch softball in the Dashwood area.
Anyone wishing toparticipate in mens or ladies slo
pitch should register before May 1. You may sign up at
three locations in Dashwood. They are Schatz's Store,
Nutt's Store and Merner's Meats.
Play will start on May 21 for the men and May 22
for the ladies.
More exciting hockey
Hockey continues to be front and centre on the
local scene with three important series still underway.
In the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Midget
"B" playoffs the Exeter midgets should have the
provincial championship by the time some people get
around to reading this week's issue of the T-A.
The midgets under the direction of coach Jack
Fuller, manager Keith Coates and trainer Jack
Underwood are meeting Bradford tonight, Wednesday
at the South Huron Rec Centre. They lead the best-of-
seven series three games to one.
In OMHA pee wee action, the Lucan pee wees
after winning the first two games of the finals gained
only a tie in two weekend games in Havelock and their
margin on the point board is now five to three.
The fifth game is set for the Lucan arena Saturday
night of this week at 5 p.m. The teams go back to
Havelock for a Sunday contest.
The most exciting action on the home front is be-
ing provided by the Exeter Mohawks and the Zurich
Buckeyes in the South Huron intermediate hockey
league championship round.
These two strong teams are currently deadlocked
at two games a piece. Three of the four games to date
were decided by only one goal and two games were
decided by overtime.
The fifth game is tonight, Wednesday in Zurich
with the sixth at the South Huron Rec Centre Friday
night and if a fifth is necessary it goes Sunday after-
noon at 2 p.m. in Zurich.
An interested spectator
A former resident of this area has been an
interested spectator at the two Exeter midget playoff
games in Bradford.
He is Sylvester Wuerth, Better known as Sonny, he
has been an enthusiastic baseball and hockey sup-
porter. for most of his 87 years.
Sonny was a member of the strong Crediton
baseball teams in the early 1920's. He now lives with
his daughter in Lefroy and really enjoyed renewing
acquaintances with a lot of local fans.
ATTENTION:
the final minute when they
got a breakaway but Peter
Parsons came up big to
make the save and keep
Exeter's slim margin intact,
Bradford pulled their
netminder for an extra at-
tacker in the dying
moments, but it backfired
when Mike Clark took a pass
from Underwood and found
the open net for the in-
of 1979 & 1980 Bikes
