The Huron Historic Gaol
will soon be opening its
doors to visitors for the sixth
season on April 7 and is to
offer a new method in self-
guided touring. as well 'as
three new features.
The new method consists
of a very concise tour
brochure that directs the
visitor's eye to hand printed;
easy to read signs that are
posted at all points of in-
terest. The use of the signs
allows the story of the gaol
to be told in more detail.
This eliminates the necessi-
ty of trying to read a long
story while coping with cell
doors and circular
stairways. It also gives each
indiiddual the privilege ' of
spending as much time as he
wished in any area of special
interest to him. The infor-
mation contained in the new
tour brochure, signs, and
booklet is based on the result
of extensive research and
documentation done by
students under various
government grants.
Assistance has also been
received from many
members of the community
and the Signal-Star. '
All of this has been in
process for the last three
years and it has taken many
hours of rewriting and
editing by historian and
chairman of the board, Mrs.
Citizens' committee
wins in first round
Studies show that the crop
yield could drop 50 percent.
Durand says that his
group did extensive research
into air pollution. After the
group ,was formed the
provincial government
appointed the royal com-
mission to look into the
matter. "We believe the
commission was appointed
because of our noise,"
Durand says.
Durand cites a 1973
example of damage from air
P-04tion. He .say,s„ there was
an excellent crop of beans,
coming that year, when a
southwest breeze- went over
the county for three days.
This breeze brought a steady
amount of pollution from the
Detroit- Windsor-Toledo
area-. Yields that year were
cut in half.
Durand says that he is also
concerned about the social
effects of industry in the
area. "I've travelled all over
the world and I think we're
living in a Garden of Eden
here," he says. He says that
industry will spoil the rural
character of our excellent
small towns,
Durand points out that only
two and, a half, percent of
land in Ontario is valuable
for farming, while 93 percent
of Huron county is valuable
farm land. He says that
industry should be put in
areas with less desirable
soil for farming.
Durand went on to
question the need for more
power generating stations.
He says that Qntario Hydro
supplies United States with
electricity while spoiling our
air and soil.
Durand is very concerned
with alternative sources of
energy. He has helped his
son build a solar heated
home, and he is currently
researching 'the use of
gasohol made from corn.

Group tours for all age
groups can still be arranged
by appointment and these
will be conducted by a well-
qualified guide.
In addition to the new
method of touring, there are
three new features to offer.
On the third floor will be a
courtroom in keeping with
the period 1839-1846 when
,County Court was held there.
On the second floor will be
the• gaoler's apartment fur-
nished as it was when the
gaoler lived in the gaol until
a cottage was built to house
his family. Also on this floor
the bathroom will be
restored to its original state,
plus equipment that was
• added through the life of the
gaol.
Curator Harry Bosnell
says that he hopes to con-
tinue restoration in this way
and eventually portray the
entire life of the gaol rather
than restore it to the 1839,
era. 'For example, when
complete, the four cell
blocks will each show a
definite period in the 133
years that the gaol was in
operation.
The flea market will
operate again each Sunday
and Holiday beginning May
18 and continue until mid-
October. This has become a
popular event where

ENTERTAINMENT
SOUTHCOTT PINES,
A Huron county_ citizens'
committee has won the first
bout in a battle against the
building of a power
generating complex. Philip
Durand of RR 2, Zurich,
chairman of the Huron
county Power Plant com-
mittee, said that his group
advised the Royal Com-
mission on Electric Power
Planning not to put a ther-
mal generating station on
the shores of Lake Huron.
Last week, Dr. Arthur
A-Forter641P4Pilof ttie,$5 million
royal commission, told the
provincial government not to
put a power plant on Lake
Huron south of Kincardine.
Porter advised Ontario
Hydro to consult the people
of the area before making
any decisions on major
developments.
Durand sees Porter's
advice as a major victory for
his group. The Huron county
power plant committee was
formed in 1974 to fight major
developments and in-
dustries. Members of this
group are from 18 different
organizations and municipal
governments.
Durand says that in 1974
Ontario Hydro proposed a
coal generated power plant
at Blake. This would have
taken several acres off his
farm, which is located about
seven miles south of
Bayfield. Durand was
chairman of the white beans
marketing board at that
tiine, and was concerned
about the effect industrial
development would have on
the soils and climate.
Durand says that a coal
generating station would
give off sulphur dioxide
which has a drastic effect on
the yield of white beans.
