The Mt Carmel P.T.A.
held a Nutrition Night,
Wednesday at the school.
Various committees
prepared a very interesting
series of food displays,
starting with colourful
posters and charts, and
following through with
samples of raw and cooked,
nutritious local foods.
A panel, moderated by
Terry Wilhelm, spoke on
various aspects of food and
nutrition,
Herman Steffens,
president of the P.T.A. spoke
on pork production; Frank
Vanneste on beans and
rutabagas; Mrs. Marion
Sullivan on the necessary
planning and preparation of
balanced, no-junk, meals;
and Dr. W. O'Connor, of
Grand Bend, on the im-
portance of developing good
eating habits in children, and
on the prevention of obesity.
After a question period,
everyone sampled the ap-
petizing snacks from each
display table; baked beans,
turnip pie, salads, dairy
products, fruit juices, and
whole grain muffins and
cookies. Recipes were
available for those who
wanted theni, and many
favourable comments were
made on this different way of
serving lunch.
A new attendance banner,
made by Mrs. Glenn Tripp,
was won by Room Seven, for
most parents, attending the
meeting.
Mrs. Diane Kaak won a jar
of maple syrup, donated by
George Glendinning, for the
closest guess on the bean jar
contest.
We were fortunate to have
the Huron County Dairy
Princess, Susan Zielman
at the dairy display. She
kindly consented to come
back the following day, to
speak to several grades, on
the duties of a Dairy Prin-
cess.
Mrs. Glendinning would
like to thank the following
people for their enthusiastic
help in presenting the
program: the members of
the panel, mentioned above;
Mr. and Mrs. Dietrich, bean
display; Mr. and Mrs. A.
Martens, Mr. and Mrs. G.
O'Leary, dairy display; Mr.
