Third game here, Friday. Times-Adyocato, April 2, 111.80 Sports Spotlight By. ROSS HAUGH Two of the three area minor hockey teams still in Contention for provincial championships are halfway there. The Exeter midgets hold a two game to nothing lead over Bradford in the OMHA midget "H" final round and the Lucan pee wees are in a similar position with Havelock in the OMHA pee wee "DD" category. Both clubs won the flip for any deciding games which may become necessary and are in excellent position as all they need to do to bring home the cham- pionships is to win on home ice. It looks as if both series could be wrapped up in the minimum of four games, but, any game or series isn't over until the final whistle goes. In the pee wee series, Lucan seems to have an ad- vantage in manpower. In the first two games Hoavlock only iced 10 skaters. Their top performer No. 4 Jim Roffey played most of Sunday's game and the extra work really affected his effectiveness. Diminutive Doug Haskett in goal for the Lucan kids turned in an excellent game to get Sunday's shutout. His play was the big difference in the' out- come. For the first seven minutes of the second period Most of the play was in the Lucan end of the rink. Off to Lake Placid Did you ever dream of playing hockey at the Olympics? This weekend it's not competition at the Olympics, but, it's second best for a recreation hockey team from Exeter. They are playing in a 38 tournament at Lake Placid, New York, the site of the recent Olympics. Known as the Exeter, Ontario Smalltimers, the local team will be basically the Pfaff Electric team bolstered by a couple of players from Lucan. They will be playing in group 1 of the "C" division for players 25 years of age or older. •The only other Canadian teams in this grouping are from Toronto, Bradford and Glen Cairn. Other teams are from Wyoming and Rochester, Michigan and Beaver Falls and Valley Forge, Penn- sylvania. A look at Ringette The game of ringette is quickly becoming a popular winter sport for girls and an introductory game has been lined up for this area. Thanks to Frank Funston at the Stephen township arena and the Huron Park Minor Hockey Association two ringette teams from Stoneybrook in London will show how the game is played. The exhibition game between the Stoneybrook Belles and the Stoneybrook Tweens will be played Thursday night, April 3 at 8 p.m. at the Stephen Township arena at Huron Park. There will be a limited number of starter kits and information booklets available for those interested in starting a league. There will be a minimal charge of 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students and children. ( Ready for ball season • While hockey is the main topic on the current sports agenda thoughts of spring are getting through to a number of baseball and fastball buffs. The first meeting of the Exeter recreational soft- ball league was held recently and it is expected 10 teams will be participating this year. In addition to regular play, the league will sponsor a rec tournament at Exeter Community Park in mid- August. This year umpiring chores will be handled by members of the Exeter Saveway club who will be back in the Southwestern Fastball Association trying to de- fend their 1979 championship. In area baseball ranks, Joe Fulop tells us the Dashwood Tigers need some new players for their Huron-Perth season. Anyone wishing to try out should call Joe Fulop at 235-1022 or Bob Hoffman at 237-3352. Takes music home An avid curler from the Exeter curling club was at the Silver Broom world curling championships in Moncton, New Brunswick last week. No, he wasn't one of the competitors. It was Gerry Smith who is one of the top fiddlers in this area and brings home several prizes each year from musical contests throughout the province. It was something like taking coal to Newcastle or salt to Goderich when Gerry and Chuck Joyce of Woodstock provided fiddling music for the entertain- ment of the competing curlers. He was told by a niece of Don Messer that is was something to have fiddlers from Ontario bringing "down east music" back home. Gerry saw the semi-final series between Norway and Switzerland, but, missed Sunday's final because of travel committments back home. Exeter coach Jack Fuller expressed confidence this week that the °MBA midget "B" title would come to Exeter after his chargers took the first two games, of their best-of-seven final against Bradford on the weekend. "We're going to win," he enthused. "I think the boys The Lucan pee wees took a big step towards an Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship over the weekend with two straight victories over Havelock. Playing on homelice, the Lucan youngsters scored a very close 3-2 victory Saturday and Sunday roared right back with a convincing 5-0 win. The third and fourth games of the best-of-seven final series will be played in Havelock Saturday and Sunday of this week. Lucan won the toss of the coin and if a fifth game is necessary it will be in Lucan, Saturday April 12 with a sixth in Havelock April 13 and a seventh if necessary in Lucan on April 19. This weekend's games in Havelock will start at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. In both games, Lucan took a 2-0 lead after the first period of play. Sunday's game was only three minutes old when David Steeper scored on a three- way ' combination with Stephen Neil and Les Arts. Steeper's successful shot was the fifth of a barrage of blasts in a few seconds. With four minutes left in the first period, Rick Emery's long shct from the blueline along the ice found the mark. Assisting were Tim Shipley and Jesse Crawford. Between the two Lucan goals, the Irish youngsters were forced to play two men short. Havelock was kept off the score sheet thanks to great goal tending by Doug Haskett and fine checking by Mike Arts, Jesse Crawford and Rick Emery. The third Lucan goal came on a power play at 7.32 of the second period as Mike Arts fired a shot along the ice into the net. Gaining the assist was Tim Shipley.
