Odds 'n Ends No ordinary ,soap opera BY ELAINE TOWNSH END Let me make one thing perfectly clear. I am not a soap opera addict like some of you. However, I usually take my lunch hour between 12 p,m. and 1 p.m, During the first half hour, I watch a tv quiz program, and during the second half hour, I watch a soap opera. Maybe your soap has sixty minutes or ninety minutes in which to unravel its tale. My story has only thirty minutes, but those thirty minutes are packed with explosive situations. Adultry, divorce, accidental deaths and homicides, weddings, parties, alcoholism, drug addiction, private detectives, un- derworld figures and shoot- outs-you name it, we've got it! My show is no low budget program, Can you say that ,your favourite soap featured k shark and a gorilla within a four month segment? 'Jaws eat your heart out' was the theme last fall when a murderous shark crept closer and closer to the unsuspecting Chevonne. The scene was so .exciting, they replayed it about five times. Each day for a week that shark crept slowly closer to the unsuspecting Chevonne. In the next week, the man- eating shark circled the panic-stricken Chevonne. Finally in the third week, the panic-stricken Chevonne was saved by her horrified but ever calm husband-to-be, Joe, And the shark went hungry. Talk about ex- citement! ' The gorilla is another tale. Dee found out her third husband was having an affair, and she decided to get even by having an affair with her stock broker. Then she and her husband decided to patch things up. Her stock broker said no' and proceeded to blackmail her. At this point, I missed two weeks of the show, and when I got back, the stock broker had disappeared. Who says things.don't happen fast in a soap opera? My theory is he's wearing cement shoes at the bottom of a lake,•the work of an underworld figure, who just happens to be a friend and business associate of the innocent and unsuspecting Dee. But what about the gorilla? Dee's husband didn't believe her blackmail story. If you had been rejected by three 'spouses, what %Mild you do? Well,, Dee started visiting the zoo and became particularly interested in a Willa, Prince Albeit, who was lonely because he had just been rejected by his mate. Dee and Prince Albert became friends, One day he got out of his cage, and Dee tricked him back in. That made him mad; the next time he got loose, he tracked. Dee into the park and kid- napped her. At time of writing, he is holding her prisoner in a dark, eerie, abondoned building somewhere in the park, and her husband is going out of his mind trying to find her. Talk about suspense! On a brighter note, it looks as though Gillian will finally get her divorce so that she can marry the man she almost married twice before but didn't. The show has had its share of tragedies. Tom and Faith 'decided they were going to have a baby. On the way to the bedroom, Tom bit into an apple, choked, fell, hit his head and died. Poor Faith has never been quite the same. In my opinion, she's drowning her sorrows to the extent of becoming an alcoholic. Her sister and brother would notice, if, the former wasn't so busy looking for his wife and that gorilla. Talk about drama! I haven't even mentioned the shoot-out in which two top hit men attempted to assassinate an underworld leader. They devastated a packed bar, killed one un- named man winged another and missed everybody else. Talk about needing target practice! ' Later they blew up the old. man's car, but that didn't work either. He wasn't in it. Finally he letdown his guard briefly, and they shot him in the head. He's old and feeble, but a bullet in the head won't stop him. Talk about resiliency! I could tell you a lot more exciting stuff, but it's almost 12:30 and I'm getting hungry. , Or just 'come in and browse! 405, MAIN STREET EXETER, ONTARIO 235-2957 \STEP PAIRAIDIE qb „ tetiealio% CIF SAW ES kII'd Open Thurs. By MARY ALDERSON If the Easter bunny needs extra baskets to deliver his eggs this year, I know where to send him. Kay Penhale of Elimville could keep the Easter bunny and all his assistants supplied with made-to-order baskets. Mrs. Penhale has been do- ing basket weaving for about .two years. She learned the craft by reading books on it. When she decided she'd like to learn basket weaving, she went to the Exeter branch of Huron county library and asked for books. None were available but they soon got some for her. She thinks Huron county library went out and bought books on weaving especially for her. It didn't take her long to come up with some baskets after studying the books. "I can pick up things by myself better than somebody trying to show me," she says. Now she's passing her knowledge along by holding classes in basket weaving at her house. She attends different craft shows in ther area, and picks up ideas from other weavers. She will also buy an interesting basket if she happens to see one in a store, then bring it home and copy it, Recently her husband, Emerson, dropped her off in London to go shopping. A few hours later she met him at the car, and she had only made.one purchase. She says he was surprised to find that the only thing she bought was another basket. Her craft has branched out beyond baskets. She has made frames for mirrors, containers for dried or silk flowers, wall hangings trays, planters, wine bottle baskets, bridesmaids' flower baskets, cornupoia, bells, magazine racks and even baby rattles. Her creations are made of reed or raffia vine which is grown in the jungles of southeast Asia, The vines run from 200 to 500 feet long. She also uses sea grass in some of her work, She buys the raffia in a store in St. Marys. When she first started buying the raf- fia, she paid about $3.50 a pound. With more and more people interested in basket weaving, the price has doubled in the past two years. The outer layer is stripped off the raffia and used for chair caning. Mrs. Penhale learned chair caning in a night school course five or six years ago, just "for something to do." "Boy did I get hooked," she says. She is also interested in furniture refinishing, and enjoys remaking old chairs. The reed or raffia used in basket weaving comes in 10 different sizes. Size number 0 is very, very fine, while 10 is thick and only used in handles. The reed is.Porous and easily absorbs dye. Mrs. Penhale soaks it in her kitchen sink, and then works at her dining room table. Heavier pieces called "stakes" form the shape„ while the other reed that is wound around is called the "weaver". Some of Mrs. Penhales creations can be purchased in area stores. She sells things through the ,FACT shop in Zurich, the Flower Basket in Hensall, and Farmer Bill's BASKET WEAVING - Kay Penhale of Elimville shows how she starts construction on a basket. The piece she is working on will form the bot- tom of the basket. Mrs. Penhale has been weaving baskets for two years.
