County rejects
new marina
Huron County council
denied an application from
Londoner Dick Peever on
Thursday to construct a
pleasure-craft marina along
the river at Bayfield,
Council upheld the plan-
ning board's recom-
mendation not to approve.the
proposal because of ob-
jections from village
residents,
A public meeting in
January saw more than 150
residents protest the plan,
They said the 100Rierth
marina would have severe
detrimental impact on the
natural environment in the
area.
The marina was to be built
on the east side of the High-
way 21 bridge in an area
known locally as the Mill
Pond,
There are already 470 slips
in marinas on the west side
of the bridge, making it the
largest pleasure-craft
harbor on the east side of
Lake Huron.
Huron planner Gary
Davidson said following the
meeting that Peever had
attempted to compromise on
the project by reducing its
size, However, planning
board still rejected it,
Peever said Sunday he is
"leaning towards" ap-
pealing, Huron County
council's rejection of his plan
for a marina here to the
Ontario Municipal Board.
Peever said no decision
will be made until he
discusses the situation with
his lawyer in about 10 days.
He said that, despite the
vocal opposition, there is a
lot of support in the area for
his plan.
An official plan amend-
ment to allow a 5,000-square-
foot food store to be built in
Zurich was approved by
Huron County council.
Don Beauchamp, who
operates a grocery store in
the village, plans to build the
new supermarket on High-
way 84 at the east end of the
village.
The proposal required an
amendment to the plan and a
change to the village zoning
bylaw to redesignate the
land for highway-
commercial use:

The Huron Perth County
'Roman Catholic separate
school board had a suc-
cessful operation last year
with expenditures within the
maximum grantable ceiling.
Gregory Fleming,
Crediton, board, finance
chairman, said Monday
night that while the overall
level of expenditure ex-
ceeded the budget, local
taxation raised in 1979 was
sufficient to not only cover
the year's , operation, but
reduced as well the prior
year's under Ivey by some
$12,000.
He noted that the year's
end statement included a
reserve of $15,000 from the
