AGRIBUILDER
BERT AND CLASINA DE BONT WITH FOUR WEANER PIGS
Wearier pigs on
Crediton farm
DON'T FORGET TO ENTER OUR CONTEST-SEE TOP CORNER OF THIS PAGE
The dream of a young man
from Hollandto one day own
his own farm in'Canada has
come true.
Bert de Bont, now 27 years
of age left his homeland in
1972 on a nine month visa to
Canada. That time was
extended and became per-
manent and he is now the
owner of a successful weaner
pig operation, north of
Crediton.
In 1977 he purchased part
of Lot 17, Concession 6 of
Stephen township which
included six acres of land
and a house and barn,
About his move to this
country, Bert de Bont says,
"I always had the idea I
wanted my own farm, but, I
couldn't do it in Holland.
There the land is 10 times as
expensive as here and is also
very scarce."
At the present time, he has
75 sows. He continued, "At
any one time, I would have 16
or 17 sows with litters and 120
weaner pigs."
All weaner pigs from the
de Bont farm go through
Quality Swine at Shedden
and are picked up weekly.
Each Friday, weaner
producers call into Quality
Produce with the number of
pigs available for the week
and they are then picked up
the following Wednesday.
The weaners going to
Quality Swine are about 10
weeks of age and weigh from
45 to 50 pounds. The current
price for weaners under 50
pounds is 85 cents per pound.
There is a good demand for
weaner pigs in Eastern
Ontario. Last week's ship-
ment from the de Bont farm
went to the Cornwall area.
Bert de Bont says there
are three important items in
being able to operate a good
weaner pig program. They
are good breeding, good
management and establish-
ment of a herd health
program.
Under his herd health
program, a veterinarian
visits the de Bont farm once
a month. It's important to
keep up to date on diseases
and a vet coming in once :.a
month will see things that we
don't see on daily basis,"
added de Bunt.
Bert said he is very well
pleased with his average of
18.5 weaners from each sow
per, year. The Ontario
average is 16.
The de Bunt weaners are
of a crossbred variety. He
has York and Landrace sows
with Hampshire, Duroc-
York, York-Landrace and
Duroc boars.
Quality Swine, co-
operative started in 1965 by
United Co-Operatives of
Ontario has 1,300 members
throughout the province.
Said de Bont," It's actually a
Co-Op owned and operated
by the farmers."
The de Bont weaner pig
operation is a family affair
as Bert gets plenty of help in
the barn from his wife
Clasina. They have a two-
month old daughter
Adrienne.
