The Zurich Buckeyes
eliminated the Centralia
Marauders in three straight
games to reach the South
Huron intermediate hockey
league finals.
After winning the first
game of the best-of-five
series a week earlier, the
Buckeyes won a close 5-4
decision Wednesday and
wrapped up the series with a
10-5 win Friday.
The Buckeyes will now
have a bit of a rest as they
wait for the winner of the
Exeter Mohawks an4,
-Hensall Sherwoods series.
Exeter leads two games to
one with the fourth game set
for Friday night.
Seven straight Zurich goals
late in the second period and
through the third period
provided Friday's victory
after the Marauders were
ahead 4-3 midway through
the second session.
The Centralia club, held a
lead at the end of the first
period on successful shots by
captain Randy Somerville on
an unassisted effort and Pete
Glover on a three-way effort
with Dennis Carty and Cec
Nickles.
The first period Zurich
score was fired by captain
John Graham with assists
going to Ron Desjardine and
Randy McKinnon.
Each team scored twice in
the first half of the second
period• as the Marauders
maintained their one goal
margin.
Rick Schilbe converted a
pass from Ron Desjardine at
the 50 second mark to even
the score and Pat Bedard hit
on passes from Mike Clarke
and John Graham to put the
Buckeyes in front 3-2.
The Marauders quickly
bounced back to regain the
one goal lead as Dennis
Carty steered in a pass from
Cec Nickles and Mark
Cronyn registered with the
assist going to Randy
Somerville.
Before the second period
ended, the Buckeyes scored
three times and were on
their way to victory. John
Graham scored on a solo
dash, Rick Schilbe converted
a pass from Graham and
Mark Cronyn scored from
Randy Somerville.
Four more Zurich scores
came quickly in the third
period. Ron Rader was a
double scorer with assists

Ontario Minor Hockey Association final playoffs
open on three area fronts this coming weekend. In-
volved are the Exeter midgets, the Ilderton midgets
and the pee wees from. Lucan,
The Exeter midget club who had little trouble in
eliminating Tilbury in the semi-final round takes on
Bradford for the provincial championship,
The first game will be played at the South Huron
Rec Centre Saturday night at 6 p,m. with the second
contest going Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Bradford.
Teams from Havelock, which is located near
Peterborough will supply the opposition for both the
Ilderton midgets and Lucan pee wees.
The schedule works out quite well for the fans
from Havelock as the games have been scheduled so
they can attend all four games this weekend.
The Lucan and pee wees square off in their first
game of a best-of-seven series in Lucan Saturday
afternoon at 3 p.m. with the second tilt slated for Sun-
day at 1 p.m.', also in Lucan.
The midget games in Ilderton are scheduled for-
Saturday evening at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 4
p.m. This gives Havelock supporters plenty of time to
switch from the Lucan arena to the Ilderton ice palace
to support their favorite team.
Special recognition is being given to the,Lucan pee
wees for their achievement in reaching the provincial
finals before Saturday's first game against Havelock.
A parade will form up at the south end of Lucan
near the OPP station at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon and
head up to the arena.
Best of luck to all three area minor teams as they
try to bring home trophies to prove they are best in
their categories in the entire province. -
Zurich tournament
The second annual Zurich Minor Athletic
Association novice hockey tournament will be held this
Friday and Saturday at the Zurich Community Centre.
Paul Morrison, president of the ZMAA says teams
from Exeter, Hensall, Parkhill, Huron Park, Alma -
Logan, Blyth, Mitchell and Zurich will be par-
ticipating.
Tourney action gets underway Friday night at 7
p.m. and resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
One of the features of the tournament is the ham
and egg breakfast which will be served Saturday mor-
ning from 8 a.m. until 12 noon.
Nearing playoffs
With only two weeks remaining in the regular
schedule of the National Hockey League some real
battles are shaping up for playoff positions.
For five of the clubs it's a case of survival by fill-
ing the last two playoff spots while the others are try-
ing to increase their point totals for better home game
advantages.
As of Sunday night, nine teams had already clinch-
ed playoff spots. They are Philadelphia, Buffalo, Mon-
treal, Boston, Minnesota, Chicago, Islanders, Rangers
and Atlanta.
St. Louis, Toronto, Los Angeles, Hartford and
Pittsburgh seem to be pretty safe in gaining a playoff
spot while Detroit, Washington, Vancouver, Edmonton
and Quebec are battling for the last two playoff
positions.
The Winnipeg Jets have already been
mathematically eliminated and the same fate should
hit the Colorado Rockies in the next few days.
While the Philadelphia Flyers are almost a sure
thing to win the overall league title, a real battle
shapes up for second place between Boston, Buffalo
and Montreal, At the moment only one point separates
the three teams, but they are some 10 points behind the
Flyers.
Of the two NHL coaching changes announced over
the weekend one was expected, but, the other was a
real surprise.
BobbyKromm's coaching days with the Red Wings
appeared to be numbered for several months, but, the
Boston decision to fire coach Freddy Creighton leaves
many heads shaking for a real reason.
The Bruins will finish at least fourth in the overall
standing and if Creighton's dismissal is any indication,
17 other coaches should be shaking in their boots.
Blue Jays promising
We know that a few exhibition games do not a season
make, but, the record to date of the Toronto Blue Jays
in grapefruit baseball league play, to say the least is
encouraging.
Their best performance came Sunday as they
defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-4 and in doing so hit
two of the Orioles top pitchers Jim Palmer and Tippy
Martinez pretty well.
The medium success of the Blue Jays has ap-
parently not reached some of the Western Ontario
media. Sunday evening, a CFPL television reporter
said "the Blue Jays finally won one." Actually it was
the sixth Toronto win in 10 starts.
One of the predictions by Rick Bosetti at the 1980
Exeter Lions Sportsmen's dinner is appearing to come
true.
Bosetti told us the Blue Jays and himself in par-
ticular would be trying to steal more bases. In their
first 10 games, the Blue Jays have stolen 15 bases in 19
attempts.
That's a very respectable average. If that percen-
tage holds up throughout the season, the Blue Jays will
be far from the worst team in major league baseball
as they were last year.
To date Alfredo Griffin, who led the Toronto club
in steals last year and Bob Bailor have yet to be
thrown out as they try to steal a base, in most cases se•
cond base.
Four of the Blue Jays top pitching hopes for good
seasons shared Sunday's victory over the Orioles.
They are Dave Steib, Phil Huffman, Jay Robertson
and Jerry Garvin.
The exhibition season record of the Orioles is all
even at six Wins and the same number of defeats.
