First game in Exeter, Saturday
Midgets reach finals against Bradford

Exeter upped the margin

middle stanza when Tuckey
hit for his second goal and
while Tilbury came right
back with their second tally
to keep close, the locals blew
them out when Mike Clark
• and Rick Lindenfield potted
markers in the final two
minutes of the frame.
Dave-Jackson was the top
play-maker for the locals as
he assisted on three goals.
Lindenfield and Mike
Murray added a pair each,
while singles were recorded
by Clark, Jeff Rowe, Tom
Coates and Dave Under-
wood.
Tilbury picked up lldf the
20 minor penalties called
with six of them coming in
the last period when they
appeared to forget about
attempting to score goals
and went looking for bodies.
Exeter jumped to the
attack quickly in the series
wrap-up in Tilbury, Satur-
day, taking a 2-1 lead in the
first and then outscoring
their hosts by a 5-1 count in
the middle frame. The teams
then traded single goals in
the final stanza.
Tilbury turned the game
into a mockery in the final
four minutes when four
players were ejected with
gross misconducts for
mouthing off at the referees
after being assessed minor
penalties.

The Exeter midgets have
gained a berth in the Ontario
"B" finals against Bradford,
the second year in a row that
a local minor team has
gained that position,
Last year the Exeter
bantams were beaten by
Ernestown in, the OMHA
final and seven of those team
members will be in this
year's event.
• The best-of-seven series
opens in Exeter this
Saturday at 6:00 and the
second game will be in
Bradford on Sunday at 3:00.
Last year's bantam team
was coached by Jack Fuller,
and Jack Underwood and the
two are at the helm of this
year's midget entry. Players
performing in their second
consecutive OMHA final are
Jamie Chaffe, Mike Murray,
Mike Clark, Dave Under-
wood, John Kernick, Dave
Shaw and Tom Coates. Bill
Glover is also a member of
the team, but has been
sidelined with a shoulder
injury.
The locals made it to the
final when they ousted
Tilbury by a 3-1count in their
best-of-five semi-final,
Exeter dropped the first
game of the set in Tilbury,
but came back to even the
set with a 5-0 win on home ice
and then posted two victories
this week,
They clipped the Tilbury
' crew by a 6-2 count at the rec
centre on Wednesday and
then wrapped it up with a
convincing 8-3 win in
Tilbury, Saturday,
Exeter spotted the visitors
an early, one-goal lead in
Wednesday's game, but then
came. roaring back with
three unanswered goals in
the first to take a lead they
never relinquished.
The locals outscored
Tilbury by a 3-1 count in , the
middle frame and then
played a scoreless third,
Exeter gave the Tilbury
supporters little time to
cheer their team's efforts in
the contest.
The visitors scored at the
2:15 mark of the first, but
Dave Shaw quickly knotted
the count 31 seconds later
with a blistering drive from
the point.
John Kernick made it 2-1
at the 13:22 mark and Pete
Tuckey completed the first
period with a tally only 39
seconds later.
Rich Fletcher played a
strong game in the first half
of the contest when Tilbury
mounted their strongest
banished when he gave "the
finger" to the officials with
two minutes left and a couple
of other players voluntarily
quit the game.
Coach Jack Fuller was
high in his praise for the
restraint shown by his
chargers as they didn't
succumb to retaliating to the
physical abuse their foes
attempted.Tilbury picked up
penalties for high sticking,
charging, roughing, and
kneeing in the final four
minutes of the contest.
The referees ordered the
clock to keep running as they
sorted out the 10-minute
misconducts and gross
misconducts they handed
out.

Pete Parsons worked
between the pipes to post the
victory.
Tilbury ended up with 16
minor penalties, six 10-
minute misconducts and five•
gross misconducts. Exeter
had 11 minors.
