Ontario municipalities
will no longer have to share
in the operating losses on
some 94,000 Ontario Housing
Corporation subsidized ren-
tal units, Housing Minister
Claude Bennett said *.
"This will mean an es-
timated saving of about $20.5
million annually for the
more than 300 municipalities
in which OHC subsidizes
rents," Bennett said.
Annual operating losses
are shared by the three
levels of government with
the federal government
usually paying 50 per cent,
the province paying 421/4 per
cent and the municipality
the remaining 71/4 per cent.
Under the new arrange-
ment, which takes effect
April 1, the province will ab-
sorb the municipal share of
the losses.
"The Speech from the
Throne announcement of
this program reflects
cabinet's response to
numerous briefs from
municipalities and
municipal organizations
seeking relief from this
financial responsibility,"
Bennett said.
"I personally derive much
satisfaction from this
program change," Bennett
said. "As a former coun-
cillor I sympathized with the
municipalities' wish to
lighten the burden of the
local taxpayer."
Although municipalities
will no longer be required to
make a financial contribu-
tion towards assisted hous-
ing losses, there will be no
change in municipal involve-
ment in housing studies and
policy development.
Further, municipalities
will continue to be involved
in the management of OHC
rental units through their
participation in the appoint-
ment of members to the
