Cage tryouts The Ontario Amateur Basketball association is again sponsoring their Chiquita junior development program. The OABA expects that more than 3,500 coaches, players and administrators will participate in these 68 local area camps. The goal is individual fundamental instruction and to invite selected. players to attend a regional try-out camp for the selection of six mens and six womens regional teams. The local or zone camps are open to any male or female basketball player in Ontario under 20 years of age. A five dollar registration fee will be charged to help finance the program. For this small fee each player will receive an in- dividualized assessment on their skills including areas to work on and a Chiquita "Stuff-It" T-shirt recogniz- ing their participation in the program. The Chiquita junior basketball program will be a unique blend of development and competition. In the selection process for regional teams, players will be exposed to excellent fundamental instruction and receive individual evaluation of their abilities. Budding basketball players from this area have taken part in this program in past years, The tryout sessions for this area will be held at Medway High School at Arva on Sunday, April 27 with men starting at 9 a.m. and female sessions slated for 12:30 at noon. Any further information on the camps 'can be ob- tained for men from Doug Hayes at 679-2111 or for women from Mary Reisbos at 451-4861. Faster curling We were able to catch a portion of the Saturday and Sunday telecasts of the World junior curling cham- pionships from Kitchener and it was refreshing to see the young men in action. Most of the games were played in a maximum of two hours. That's a sharp contrast from the Canadian men's championships a week earlier from Calgary where some games went in excess of three hours. The junior curlers wasted no time in deciding which shot they were going to try and in inost cases went right at it and were successful. The senior Brier curlers took ages to decide the shot and turn they were going to throw. In one game they debated for minutes on a lead's shot. We hope this quick decision making of the junior curlers carries on as they grow older and compete in senior ranks. Sure makes for better television viewing. Blue Jays viewing While the TOrontoBlue Jays radio broadcasts in 1980 will not be heard in this area, we will have the chance to see 16 games on television. CRC television will be on hand to cover the Jays opening home game at CNE Stadium on April 14 against the Milwaukee Brewers. The New York Yankees wilibe featured on three of the telecasts. Former Yankee star Tony Kubek will be agin teaming with Don Chevrier to do the play by play. In addition CBC viewers in Ontario will see 10 games involving the Montreal Expos. A CLOSE ONE — This was as close as Tilbury came to beating Rich Fletcher in Sunday's midget game at the rec centre. The puck hit the, post and was resting in the crease whore Tilbury had two whacks at it before Exeter smothered the play. Defencemen Jim Lovie (5) and Jamie Chaffe (3) attempt to keep the visitors from the rebound. Staff photo Start slowly The Exeter crew started out slowly in the Sunday tilt at the rec centre and Flet- cher made most of his big saves in the first period when Tilbury made their best showing. The locals played two men short for one stretch but held the visitors off the sheet. John Kernick finally put the locals on the scoreboard late in the first stanza when he intercepted a pass outside the blueline and skated in for what turned out to be the winner. The bantam star picked up his second goal of the night in the early going of the second when he was left alone in BACK-CHECKING HELPS — Netminder Rich Fletcher has plenty of help on this play as four defenders help clear the disc.
