TOWN AND COUNTRY HOMEMAKERS — After suffering a stroke, Dorothy Foster need-
' ed some help 'around the house, and someone to see that she managed with her exercises.
Wanda Reynolds, one of Huron County's Town and Country Homemakers, came to the
Fosters' home to help out. Here she places sand bags on Mrs. Foster's ankles, and supervises
her exercises. Mr. Foster made the sand bags as directed by the physibtheropist.T-A photo.

Canned fruit offers a fine
selection of Ontario's suc-
culent, summer fruits to
enjoy year-round. And it's
great to know there's a range
of sugar syrup levels to
choose from as well , say the
marketing officers at the
Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
Consumers' preferences
for sugar syrup levels vary
and, in response to this,
goVernment regulations,
were changed a few years
ago to provide a choice of
several syrup strengths.
Formerly, a specific
minimum concentration of
syrup was required for each
type of fruit, This was in-
dicated on the label, such as
45 percent sugar syrup for
peaches. The regulations
have now changed to in-
dicate the percentage of
,sugar in the complete con-
tents of the can, not just the
syrup. The sugar level
equalizes between the fruit
and the syrup so that each
contain the same percentage
of sugar.

Wanda is a homemaker
with Huron County Town and
Country .Homemakers. She
came to the Foster's home
on Senior street and helped
i
with the cooking and
cleaning. Wanda'S also been
helping Mrs. Foster with the
exercises that the
physiotherapist told her to
do. As Mrs. Foster im-
proved, Wanda came less
and less often, until last
week, when the Fosters felt
they could get along without
her. Now Wanda goes on to
help someone else.
The administrator of the
Town and Country
Homemakers, Jean Young
says that the main purpose
of the homemakers is to
maintain and preserve a
family environment.
Sometimes an accident or
illness can split up a family,
or upset the routine of a
family.
The idea of having
someone come into the home
to help out is not a new one.
Many of the homemakers
were working along this line
before the Town and Country
Agency was formed.
The homemakers decided
that an agency was needed to
organize their work, and in
January 1978 they formed a
group. Jean Young took the
job of administrator, and an
office was set up in
Wingham, at 316, Josephine
Street, The phone number is
357-3222.
All the homemakers must
be qualified. They have to
take a three month course at
Conestoga College where
they learn basic nursing
skills and interpersonal
relations. The course is very
similar to a registered
nurses assistant course,
Mrs. Young says'.
e
often work in conjunction
with a nurse from the Vic-
torian. Order of Nurses. The
homemaker will also give
therapy under the direction
of a physic), occupational and
speech therapist,'
The homemakers will
supervise in Meal planning,
and the preparation of
nourishing food, They will do
shopping : light
housekeeping, ironing and
mending.
Often Town and Country
Homemakers is the only
thing keeping someone out of
a hospital or institution,
About 75 percent of the
people they visit are elderly,
and the rest are stroke
Victims, heart attack
patients, accident victims or
people who are recovering
from surgery, "It's
surprising how little help is
needed to keep a family
together," Mrs. Young says.
There is no set wage for
the homemakers service—
,theycharge between $1 to $5
an hour, depending on how
much the family.can afford
to pay. The Town and
Country Homemakers will
assess the users ability to
pay. The homemakers
receive a salary from the
agency. Sometimes the
homemaker is hired by the
individual, other times She's
hired by a government
A new film about quilting
is now available, free of
charge, for screenings to
women's institutes, chur-
ches, agricultural societies,
4-H clubs, etc.
The film is a complete look
at the craft of quilting and
touches on the origin and
history of this art, its decline
and renaissance as well as
the rural roots of the craft
and the people who practice
it.
It shows the enormous
resurgence of quilting as
displayed with interest and
enthusiasm at rural Fall
fairs across Canada,
When asked about the
sponsorship of a film on
quilting, Murray Stewart,
Public Relations Manager
/ for Canada Packers Inc.,
'pointed' out ,-,theiraompany's
foots are in rural Canada,
being closely associated with
agriculture and food
production. Similarly, the
history of quilting is closely
associated with, rural
Canadians.
"It is a unique film
because its importance goes
beyond the craft itself."
stated Mr. Stewart as he
explained that ultimately the
agency such as Community
and Social Services.
Funds for the agency •are
raised in a number of
ways. They charge a $2
membership fee,, and they
are a charitable organization
and will accept donations.
,As well, they raise money
through rummage sales, and
by saving stamps and labels.
Originally they were given
government grants to set up
their organization.
Recently they expanded
the services they offered.
They now offer what they
call home help services.
Volunteers will assist with
friendly visiting, whether in
person or by telephone, and
they will help with tran-
sportation. Baby sitters can
be supplied, and barbers or
hairdressers will visit the
homebound to do hair.
Housecleaners will visit the
home to do heavy
housecleaning, and handy
men are available to help
with gardening, raking, lawn
mowing, or putting on storm
windows. ,
The homemakers code of
ethics reads: "The
homemakers or home
helpers will respect the

identity as Canadians and is
an expression of an im-
portant aspect of our culture
and heritage as a people. "It
is another thread which can
assist in tieing together the
fabric, our Nation." Mr.
Stewart went on to point out
how the film shows the
growth in numbers of
quilters and quilting guilds
emerging in urban areas and
the craft being taught by the
old to the young.
