FARMER OF THE WEEK Spring Discounts On
The Shapton beef family
"It's a family affair."
That's the way Bruce and
Dolores Shapton describe
their success as a farm
operation in Stephen
township.
The Shaptons who live on
Lot 16, Concession 2 of
Stephen, two miles and a half
south-east of Exeter agree in
saying, "The whole family
has been a big help and we
wouldn't be where we are
today without them." Bruce,
Dolores and family now
operate 200 acres of land and
specialize in beef cattle.
They have lived on their
present home farm since
1958 and also own and
operate 100 acres at Lot 20,
Concession 3, a fourth
generation 'Shapton farm.
' The number of cattle in the
Shapton barns is down
considerably this winter
because of the current
economy.
In recent years they have
housed between 200 and 250
cattle. This year the number
has been reduced to 150.
Bruce continued, "The
cost of the cattle was higher
than ever last fall and the
high interest rates certainly
hurt. I paid well over $1 a
pound for this year's cattle,
which are mostly steers,"
For the first time, Bruce
Shapton travelled to Alberta
in late November and
supervised the purchase of
the cattle. Other years they
were bought -through the
Hensel' Sales Arena.
About the trip, Bruce said,
"It was a good experience
and the cost of the trip was
about the same as we usually
paid in commissions,"
The cattle were loaded in
Calgary on a Thursday
morning and arrived at the
Shapton farms at 4 a.m. the
following Tuesday.
The steers weighed) in at
530 pounds and the few
heifers in the group
averaged 590 pounds.
All the feed necessary for
the cattle now in the Shapton
barns is grown on their own
land, except for some protein
supplement.
In addition to their busy
farm duties; the Shaptons
have contributed a lot to
community affairs.
Bruce is a past president
of the Stephen Federation of
Agriculture, a past director
of the Exeter and District
Co-Operative and was presi-
dent of the Exeter Fair
Board in 1974 and 1975 and
continues as a director of the
fair's feeder calf club.
Dolores was president of
the Crediton Women's
Institute for a two year term,
headed the school division of
the Exeter Fair for several
years , :ands is presently
president of the ladies
division.
On the farm her jobs are
varied ranging from cook to
book keeper to forage
operator to driver of the
tractors of all sizes.
About tractors, she said,
"I saw a big one at the Farm
Show last week that I'm not
sure I could handle, but,
Howard Pyxn came along
and said I could manage that
one in a couple of minutes,
too."
Two of the Shapton
children have won awards in
farm related contests. Janet,
now a RNA student at
FanshaweCollege was
Queen of the -Furrow for
Huron County in 1979.
Bevan, currently in grade
12 at South Huron District
High School won the Huron
Junior plowing champion in
1978 and reserve champion
in 1979.
Their oldest son Wayne
helps in the farm operation
and is now involved as a
carpenter's apprentice.
The other children are
Diane, a secretary in Toron-
to and Sandra, Mrs. Steve
Murley who lives in
Hamilton.
