The lads rolled out of bed .fora 6:00 a.m. departure and in their opener, sent the highly touted Belmopt team into overtime before being subdued, The layoff didn't appear to faze netminder Paul Cooper who made several big saves to keep the locals in contention throughout the contest. Belmont took a lead in the first period, but Jim Siddall got that one back before the initial stanza elapsed when he fired a blazing slap shot from just inside the blueline. Al Gaiser and Kevin Heather picked up the assists. Belmont moved ahead again in the third and ap- peared headed for the win with time running out, but Exeter pulled their net- minder and notched the equalizer with eight seconds left on the clock. Heather shoved the puck across the line after Graham Kobe dug the puck out of the corner and put it in front of the net. Belmont was not to be deriied, however, as they took advantage of the tired Exeter crew and dominated play in the extra session, finally winning it with a breakaway goal with just over three minutes remaining. They were wondering after their second game what might have happened if they played 14-minute third periods rather than 15. For the Second time this season, Belmont scored a last-minute win over the loCals and Sunday's triumph by Belmont with 41 seconds left put them into the final and sidelined Exeter. Belmont then went on to win the championOip with a convincing 4-1 win over Dorchester. The Waxers overcame a 2- 0 Belmont lead with three quick goals in the middle frame and they held that margin until midway through the final stanza when the eventual' champs evened the count at 3-3. The game appeared to be heading into overtime when Jason Clark picked up a puck and fired a high shot into the top corner to give Belmont the triumph. Doug Clark paced the Exeter rally in the second period as he notched a pair of markers within a span of less 1 - 6:00 1 - 6:00 1 - 7:30 than a minute and Tom Rolph added another only 14 seconds after Clark's to give them their lead. Laurie Chalmers assisted on two of the goals while Rolph and Jeff Chipchase picked up one assist each. In their tournament opener, the Waxers scored a thrilling 3-2 overtime win against Strathroy as they knotted the count with 34 seconds left in regulation time and then scored after 39 seconds in the sudden death overtime. Strathroy took a 2-0 lead in that game in the second period, but the Waxers battled back from the deficit. Graham Arthur scored the first tally when he pushed a puck across,the line on a play with Doug Clark and then Larry Lewis knotted the count on a play with Clark in the final seconds as Exeter pulled their goalie in favor of an extra forward and the play worked. Lewis came back with the overtime winner, when he picked up a pass from Clark and battled his way from behind the net to push the disc into, an open corner. Goaltenders Scott Wedlake and Harlen Tinney came up with several big saves throughout the contest to keep the locals in contention for their last-minute heroics. The Centralia College Saints edged the Hensall Sherwoods 7-5 Thursday night to take a one game lead in the first round of South Huron hockey league playoffs. The second game of the best-of-five series was played Monday night and the third goes tonight 'Wed- nesday in Hensall. In Thursday's contest, the Saints led 3-2 after the first period of play and 6-3 after 40 minutes, Ken Vanos converted a pass from George Black at 1.19 to start the College scoring. The Sherwoods took a temporary lead on two power play goals by Jamie Caldwell and Allan Taylor. Assisting were Gary Kyle, Fred Campbell and Brian Campbell..
