OMHA win Shomrock gold
Off the air
Goodbye Blue Jays,
This season of 1980 is the fourth of the Toronto.
Blue Jays in the American baseball league, but, they
are being written off by CFPL radio in London.
CFPL which has carried most of the Blue Jay's
broadcasts for the first three seasons announced last
week that the broadcasts are being discontinued.
One of the reasons given by radio station manager
Bud Knight was that Toronto team has failed to spend
some of their money to bring in name players which
would help the team in the standings.
We are certainly disappointed in CFPL's decision
as we caught as many games as possible during their
first three years and the Blue Jays came pretty close
to replacing the Detroit Tigers as our favourite club.
The station must remember that the Blue Jays are
as much an Ontario team as the Tigers are a Michigan
club. We are not absolutely sure about this, but, would
guess that the WJR Detroit Tiger network has a
number of stations that are farther from Tiger
Stadium than London is from Exhibition Stadium in
Toronto.
In fact, we remember at least one occasion when
we did tune in Ernie Harwell and the Tigers that they
welcomed a new station in northern Michigan.
The Tigers can be accused just as much as the
Blue Jays for not bringing in star players.
CFPL may think three years is a long time, but, in
Detroit it is now 12 years since the Tigers won the
World Series and had a competitive club.
They were very fortunate to win in 1968 with a
bunch of veterans. They started a youth program a
couple of years later and are still waiting for
successful results.
CFPL said the cancellation was for only one year
and would be considered again next spring. If there are
any of our readers also disappointed, a letter$ to the
radio station outlining your feelings is in order. We
have already done so.
