Accident rate down
The Ontario Provincial
Police announced today that
the motor vehicle collision
experience for the month of
January on highways under
their 'jurisdiction indicates a
substantial decrease over
the same period last year,
In January 1979 there were
64 fatal collisions compared
to 55 this year, a reduction of
14 percent. Persons killed
was reduced 16 percent from
80 to 67. Personal injury
collisions and persons in-
jured dropped 25 percent and
31 percent. The total number
of collisions was reduced by
28 percent,
Assistant Commissioner
J.S. Kay, Traffic Division,
Toronto, stated "A survey of
our Selective Enforcement
Program revealed the
number of patrol hours and
charges laid has increased
dramatically, 9 percent in
hours and 33 percent in
charges. The Force has 173
stationary, moving and
hand-held radar sets in
operation across the
Province, with an en-
forcement increase of 92
percent.
"We also utilized un-
marked police cruisers and
moving and hand-held radar
equipment in our Com-
mercial Vehicle Enfor-
cement Program in our
Districts from Windsor to
North Bay. This program
was commenced on
February 5, 1979, therefore
no comparisons are
available, I would also
report that charges for
failing to use seat belts also
increased by 56 percent.
The unseasonable weather
encountered during January
not only resulted in fewer
motor vehicle collisions but
also reduced the fatal snow
vehicle collisions by 78
percent from 14 in 1979 to 3
this year. This resulted in a
64 percent reduction of
persons killed from 14 to 5.
Fewer collisions freed up
our personnel for increased
patrol and selective en-
forcement which also
manifested itself in the total
accident experience.
This fact bears out
the Force theory that
preventative patrols are
most important in reducing
traffic collisions on Ontario
roads." Seers
