Another program of a
different type that young
people would be interested in
is the. Agricultural Youth
Exchange program, This
International program
places young people in
agricultural or horticultural
operations in other countries
for periods of four months to
one year. The exchange
program was established to
give young people who have
a keen interest in agriculture
a chance to learn more about.
the production techniques in
other countries, These young
people also broaden their
horizons by experiencing
another culture,
Ontario Farmers have
been host for the youth ex-
change program for several
years. Japanese young
people have been griven the
opportunity to train on
Ontario Farms for 22 years.
A similar arrangement with
the United Kingdom began in
1969 and with Denmark in
1973.
Organizers of the program
would like to place one
Ontario person in another
country for every person
placed in Ontario. For, the
1980 program beginning in
the spring, it is hoped that
there would be 55 exchange
opportunities for, the
following countries-
France 15: Denmark 10:
United Kingdom 15: and up
to 15 for Japan.
Arrangements can also be
made for young people who
want to work in the Nether
lands,
To be eligible for the
program the young men and
women must be planning a
career in agriculture or
horticulture. They must be
between' 18 and 28 years of
age and have at least 2 years
experience in agriculture or

The aim of his Farming for
the Future project is to
develop procedures for
screening winter' wheat for
snow mold resistance under
controlled environmental
conditions.
In areas of Alberta where
snow cover is prolonged and
heavy, snow mold pathogens
can be a major factor in the
survival of over-wintering
crops such as winter wheat.
Using fungicides is a
possible control measure but
resistant varieties are
perceived as a more
economical and long-term
solution.
Development of controlled
environment screening
procedures will eliminate
the dangers of relying on
once-per-year field testing,.
will encourage new breeding
projects and will expedite
the development of resistant
winter wheat cultivars
suitable for growth in central
and northern Alberta,
At present, most of the
winter wheat acreage is in
the southern part of the
province. Hard red winter
wheat often yields
significantly higher than
spring cereals, matures
earlier thus escaping fall
frost and permits a more
efficient distribution of
labour and equipment.
Availability of snow mold-
resistant varieties will allow

Dressing rooms in a
temporary trailer out back
and sharing washrooms with
theatre patrons will soon be
a thing of the past for actors
at Blyth Memorial Hall,
home since 1975 to the
nationally acclaimed Blyth
Summer Festival.
Construction of an addition
and installation of im-
provements to the existing,
circa 1920, Blyth Memorial
Hall, costing a total of
$316,000 are expected to be
completed by May 1.
The Blyth Summer
Festival, heading into its
sixth season, is one of the few
theatres in the country
performing only original
Canadian scripts. Its budget
has grown from $10,000 to a
proposed $143,000 this
summer and 1979 audiences
in the 400 seat theatre topped
21,000, a 13 percent increase
over 1978.
The 1980 season is the
festival's first under new
artistic director Janet Amos,
who takes over from founder
James Roy.
The two story addition,
which will provide a box
office, an art gallery and
community crafts room on
the ground floor, dressing
rooms, washrooms and
storage facilities on the
second floor is covered with
red brick from the company
which supplied the brick
when the original hall was
built.
Ross Hamilton, general
manager of CKNX Broad-

chairman. Joining him on
the building fund committee
are Susan Howson and Helen

president of the board of

Grants from various levels
of government have con-
tributed over $200,000 and so
far, $25,000 of the $95,000 goal
has come in from the private
sector.
