Weed Meeting
In spite of advances in
herbicides, weeds continue
to be a problem in crop
production. New species are
coming into fields, old
species become resistant to
certain chemicals and in-
creasing population of
problem weeds make weed
control even more difficult.
The problem weeds will be
highlighted and controls
discussed in a weed meeting
at the Lucknow Legion Hall,
Tuesday, March 11th, from
10:30 a.rn, until 3:30 p.m.
Mike Miller, Associate
Agricultural Representative
for Huron County.
Liquid Manure Storage
Are you being robbed ,of
manure storage? Whether
you like it or not, the answer
is yes. The problem is twice
as bad if you have an open-
top tank.
In any manure tank, there
is always a certain amount
that can't be completely
removed. This includes
sludge buildup and the last
half foot or so that just can't
be taken out because of the
design of the pump. One man
in the business of custom
manure hauling said that
most tanks were left with an
average of about one foot of
manure.
Another commonly
overlooked robber is
precipitation. In a six month
period we get about 18 inches
of precipitation-whether in
the form of rain or snow.
This doesn't evaporate in the
winter so you're left with
that much less storage for
manure.
So, when figuring out your
tank size, figure the size of
tank you'll need based on
manure production for at
least six months. Then add
on about two and one half
feet for an open-top tank,
You can modify this for a
covered tank or where there
is extra storage in the barn.
Information on sizing
manure storages is available
at the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food Office
Clinton.

ensure that all pedigreed
seed meets rigid standards.
They inspect the seed first
in the fields, then again when
it is being bagged and
graded and finally spot in-
spections are made when it
is offered for sale.
Non-pedigreed seed is not
officially inspected except
on a spot check basis, but it
must be graded, and must
not carry a variety name. It
is labelled only as Canada
No. 1, Canada No. 2 or
Canada No. 3.
All pedigreed and non-
pedigreed seed advertised
for sale must be graded.
Seed that is not advertised
for sale usually falls into the
third category. It is not in-
spected or graded.

A grain field choked by
weeds is not a pretty sight,
for any farmer, And those
profit-robbing weeds may
have resulted from buying
poor seed.
"What hurts most is that
the loss could be avoided
simply by taking more care
in buying seed," says Wilf
Bradnock, chief of
Agriculture Canada's seed
section. "A crop is only as
good as the seed put in the
ground."
Mr. Bradnock is en-
couraging farmers to "think..
seed" during March-Good
Seed Month.
All seed sold in Canada
falls into one of three dif-
ferent categories.
Pedigreed seed is sold
under a variety name and it
must be inspected and
graded. It is designated
foundation, registered or
certified seed, depending on
how many times it has been
multiplied, and the stan-
dards it meets.

often cleaned at local
elevators," Mr. Bradnock
says.
"A farmer may sell seed to
a neighbor in good faith, hut
that seed could be full of
weed seeds or low in ger-
mination. Even after
cleaning at an elevator, it
may still contain weed or
other crop seeds," Mr.
Bradnock says.
In a survey carried out
several years ago on Alberta
farms, one-third of the seed
being planted did not Meet
even the minimum
requirements for Canada
grades:
Ina similar survey in
Manitoba, the figure was
more than 40 per cent.
"For the small cost dif-
ference between pedigreed
seed and other seed, it
makes sense to purchase'the
best seed available," Mr.
Bradnock says.
If a farmer has any doubt
that graded seed is not what
is claimed on the label, he
should consult . local
Aviculture Canada of-
ficials.
A seed buyer is also en-
titled to ask the weed seed
content of any seed offered
for sale.
Mr. Bradnock stresses
that seed buyers have the '
right to know exactly what
they are getting.

Avoid Manure Spills
Large spills of manure mean trouble when
they enter our streams and rivers. They
MR fish, upset aquatic plant life and are
dangerous to the people and animals
downstream who use that water.
With Proper Storage
All Ontario farmers should be following
proper manure storageprocedtlres, The
need for adequate manure storage is well
