Staff photo The Exeter Kinsmen. midgets have their backs to. the wall in their QMHA quarter-final series with. Port Elgin, but that's not an unfamiliar spot for the locals. They've battled back from several deficits this. season, and on Sunday they showed local fans they could still do it. The local squad dropped their best-of-five opener in Sunday night, facing elimination, they came out flying and built up a 6-0 lead and then coasted to an 6-4 triumph to send the series into the fourth game. That game was played last night (Tuesday) in Port Elgin. If Exeter won, the fifth game will, be at the ree centre on Friday at 6;30 p.m. Flu stops some With several players battling the flu bug, the locals. couldn't muster a strong attack in the series opener in Port Elgin. The home team led 1-0 after one and increased their margin to three goals before Exeter could get on the score sheet. When they did, Port Elgin came back with three more to win going away. Ed Willis and Pete Tuckey scored for Exeter, with assists going to John Ker- nick, Rick Lindenfield and Dave Jackson. Both teams picked up eight minors in the contest. Playing at home, Friday, the Exeter crew fell apart defensively in the second period as they watched the visitors pile up a 6-1 lead. however, they turned things around in the latter stages of the middle frame and throughout the third to. .come up with a spirited rally that left the teams tied at,6-6 at the end of regulation time.. Exeter don.iinated play throughout the extra 10- minute session, but NO couldn't find the range. Port Elgin finally won it when Scott Jamieson broke loose with less than three minutes. left to beat Pete Parsons and send the locals down to their second straight defeat. Mike Clark paced the Exeter attack with a hat trick performance, while adding singles were Dave Shaw, Dave Underwood and Mike Murray. Underwood and Mike Murray picked up four assists to lead in that department while Ed Willis. picked up one: With their backs to the wall, Sunday, the locals .came out roaring and held a 5-0 lead in the first and added one more in the second before the visitors could get on the score sheet with only Sassenachs still lead in dart loop The Sassenachs scored a 3- 2 win over the Rowdy Ones to maintain their two-point lead over the Doublers in the Exeter Legion mixed darts league this week. The DOublers also posted a 3-2 win over the Chances to keep pace with the front- runners. However, Evil Eyes lost 3-2 to Out of Space to drop back into third place after enjoying a second place tie last week. Out of Space and Outlaws hold down fifth place with 63 points behind the Winkers, who continue to hold fourth only five points back of the leaders. Itchy Niters and Nicky Tams are tied at 62 points and there are three teams with 61. They include DRs, Scotties and Chances. The tournament started in Strathroy on Saturday, where the locals posted a 2-1 triumph over London Minor. John Kernick and Ted Oke fired the markers and each assisted on the other's tally. Scott Brintnell and Dave Hayter also picked up assists. The tournament switched to the rec centre on Sunday and Oakridge ousted the locals with a 3-0 win. Exeter held a man ad- vantage for a total of 17 minutes in the contest, but couldn't score. They had one extra man for nine minutes straight in the second period when Rob Robertson picked up a major and two minors on a butt ending call. The locals rattled a pair of shots off the goal post, but that was as close as they could come to the London team. Lambeth won the title, as they squared off with Strathroy in the final. Strathroy battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game, but the new champs picked up the winner with five minutes left to get the championship medals. Lambeth gained the finals with wins over St. Marys and LMHA, while Strathroy stopped Oakridge with a 2-1 win in the second period of overtime in their semi-final. Atoms ousted The Exeter atoms travelled to the London Intermediate PLAYOFF HOCKEY CCAT SAINTS vs HENSALL SHERWOODS Thurs., Mar. 6 8 p.m. Gardens for their Shamrock playoff, Saturday, winning their first encounter, but being ousted after dropping a 2-0 verdict to Strathroy in their second test. In the opener, the locals •trimmed Oakridge by a 4-0 count as Fred Gregus and Scott Heywood recorded the shutout. Jon O'Connor and Vern Iskauskas paced the attack with a pair of markers each. Scott Boyd helped out on a pair and drawing single assists were Steve Lingard, Dave Russell, Danny McLean, Lee Watt and Robbie McKnight. Exeter and Strathroy played a scoreless draw through the first half of their game before Strathroy scored midway through the second and added an in- surance marker at the 6:56 mark of the third. Novice here on Sunday The Exeter Waxers will play host to three other teams in the annual Shamrock "B" playoff at the rec centre, Sunday. The four teams will play in a round-robin with Exeter meeting Strathroy in the initial test at 10:00 a,m. Dorchester and Belmont will battle one hour later. The next two games are at 2:00 and 3:00 and the final encounters are scheduled for 6:00 and 7:00. The local midgets will be in St. Marys on Saturday for the "A" playoff with their first game at 10:15 against Port Stanley. The Exeter midget II team play in the "B" playoff at Dorchester, also on Saturday.
