TOWNSHEND Well, here we are settled safe and sound into March. Technically spring should be just a few weeks away, but with the unpredictibility of the seasons in recent years, I'll believe it when I see it. Tulips in January? Roses in April? A blizzard in August? Who knows? I entered this winter with some trepidation. For the past three winters, I've lived in a second floor apartment. High, above the drifts I felt aloof from, the storms, even though I knew I had to go out sooner or later. Last fall I moved into a ground floor apartment, and as winter approached, I thought to myself, "If we get as much snow as we got four years ago, I'll be living in an igloo. The gloomy forecasts of certain prognosticators did little to allay my fears. But it was not to be. VIlhelleVeahly- we're now entrenched in March ,and I Can still open my doers,. look out my windows and drive in and out my lane. Now that's my kind of winter! The only times it has stormed is when I've had out-of-town pointments. At least, that's the way it seems, Don't get me wrong, This. is my kind of winter and I've enjoyed it. I'm not coal- plaining. Ironically we've had more complaints from snow lovers this winter than snow haters. People who received skiffs as Christmas gifts are maybe wishing they'd work on water. Others who bought Memberships to ski clubs in December are saying, "Three trips to the slopes is not getting my money's worth." Snowmobiles sit ready and waiting for that big blow and that big run. When a bit of snow comes, they're off to enjoy it before the sun melts it. Ski lodge owners are wondering, "Where are the skiers? What would we do with them if they did show up? Where the heck IS, the snow?'" Even man's ingenious invention, called artificial snow was fouled up more than once by mild. temperatures. on the eve of the weekend, As if the Winter Olympic- organizers in. Lake PlaCid didn't have enough, problems, they weren't certain until a. few days before the events whether they'd have snow. Meanwhile the rest of us sit back and enjoy this relatively calm winter, We sympathize with our outdoor recreation friends but not enough to feel guilty about liking it this way. We'll be quite content if the winter *sea the way it began. But that might be too much for us to hope for. Everytime a storm starts most people think "This is it". "This is gonna last." And maybe someday it will, regardless of what the. calendar says. Maybe the winter people will have the last laugh, after all. must use The microwave oven saves energy when used instead of a conventional oven, but not always less than the surface unit. The food consultants at Food Advisory Division, Agriculture Canada have conducted some tests comparing the energy used when cooking with the microwave oven, the surface unit and the conventional oven. Generally, when cooking times are similar or when cooking large quantities of food, the surface unit is more energy efficient. So that when using a microwave oven on a regular basis, note that the quantity of food affects energy consumption. If you're cooking two servings of pork chops for Master Gordie Hamilton celebrated his 8th birthday on Sunday with his grand- mother, Mrs. Margaret Hamilton, who is a patient in St. Joseph's hospital in London. Over 80 club Mrs. Myrtle Masse of Zurich will be 86 on Saturday March 8. it wisely example, the surface unit uses up about 200 watt hours, the microwave oven about 350 (75 percent more than the unit) and the conventional oven about 750 (275 percent more than the unit.) Preparing a two-kilogram pot roast tells a different story. The surface unit consumes about 1100 watt hours whereas the microwave oven about 1450, only about 32 percent more energy. The conventional oven takes 4600 watt hours to cook the same pot roast, about 300 percent more than the surface unit. ' In both cases, •the surface unit is obviously more economical in terms of energy consumption but when it comes to cooking a larger cut of meat like a pot roast, the microwave oven is a close runner-up. The microwave oven is a useful took but use it wisely. As much as possible, avoid using it to thaw frozen food. Thawing in the refrigerator uses no extra energy. Whenever possible, cover food to speed up cooking. But avoid using plastic wraps, wax paper or disposable paper products when you have reusable alternatives (e.g. covered casserole). Use standing time to finish cooking and keep the oven clean. Spilled food absorbs energy that could be used for cooking. Hurondale girls meet . fourth 'meeting at the home. of Mrs.. Hero. - mite.
