Approximately 100 friends,
neighbours and relatives
gathered at the Ailsa Craig
United Church Sunday af-
ternoon to honour Mrs. Ella
Tweddle of John Street in
Ailsa Craig on her 90th birth-
day.
The family planned and
organized a surprise bir-
thday party to celebrate.
"I didn't know a thing
about it until a couple of days
before", reported Mrs.
Tweddle.
She received - a wide
assortment of cards wishing
her happy birthday from
near and far and several
gifts of flower, Among the
special guests was MPP
Jack Riddell who presented
her with a plaque from the
Ontario government.
A large birthday cake and
tea was served to the guests
by her granddaughters.
Born in London,9ntario on
February 18, 1890' of a
Canadian father and Scottish
mother, she moved to Ailsa
Craig from her farm on the
7th Concession shortly after
her husband William died,
approximately 27 years ago.
She remains in the house on
John Street that she moved
to when she first came to the
village.

Cross country skiing has
become more and more
popular the last couple of
years and many of the
residents of the Ailsa Craig
area have learned what fun
and new vigor this sport has
to offer.
Twenty-five, young and old
enthusiasts met at the Nairn
Church on Sunday afternoon
ready and eager to take on
the further challenges of
snow and hills.
Lorne Davis, a physical
Lady 90
at Craig
education instructor at the
University of Western
Ontario along with Auke Van
Hoist a ski instructor, and,
his son Michael, met with,the
group to he'll increase skills
and technical knowledge.
The group was first given
careful instruction on the
care of skis and the .proper
techniques of waxing in
readiness to take to the
trails,
Then the group donned the
skis they'd waxed and
gathered out in the back of
the church for actual
workouts. The children met
in one group and putting
their new knowledge into
practice and experienced
what fun tag can be on cross
country skis.
For the adults,, the in-
struction was carefully
guided and not only included
skiing techniques but also
the proper way to fall-
successfully and get up
again.
Instructionon clothing and
the best way to dress for
easy movement and warmth
was also given by Mr. Davis
during a brief warm up
period back in the church,
before the final session out
on the hill beside Pastor
Dave Brunner's home where
one needed all the skills
learned in the first session.
