Times-Advocate, 1980-02-20, Page 10Readying for Skating Carnival
All of the close to 180 members of the Exeter
figure skating club are busy preparing for their annual
carnival. It goes in two sessions on Saturday March 5
at the South Huron: Rec Centre.
Club president Marie Tiernan and carnival con-
vener Pat Down along with their professional/ instruc-
tors have lined up an interesting program.
The theme this year will be Mother Goose and you
can expect to see a wide variety of fairy tale costumes
and characters,
Interspersed with the local presentations will be
guest skaters. Leading the group will be Exeter's own
Laurie Prout and her partner Bill Scriver who placed
sixth in the novice dance pairs competition in the re-
cent Canadian championships.
Next come Mary Jo Fredy and Tim Mills, 1980
junior pairs medalists and Anissa Gurchin, 1979 pre-
novice Western Ontario sectional medalist. •
Last game at Olympia
The last hockey game ever to be played in the
Detroit Olympia will take place this Thursday night,
February 21.
A recent poll by the Detroit media selected 21 of
the players ever to wear a Red Wing uniform and 17 of
that group will be honoured Thursday night. Four of
the group are deceased.
There was no surprise with the selection, of the late
Jack Adams as the manager and coach of Detroit NHL
teams. Before they became the Red Wings the team
was known as the Cougars and Falcons. The team was
established in the late 1920's.
Jack Adams was connected with the Detroit
franchise for more than 30 years and was in charge of
the Wings when Gordie Howe broke in. That was some
33 years ago.
The four goalies selected for the Red Wings dream
team were the late Terry Sawchuck, Glenn Hall,
Harry Lumley and Roger Crozier.
The other players named were Larry Aurie, Her-
bie Lewis, Reg Noble, Ebbie Goodfellow, Bill
Quackenbush. Syd Howe, Bob Goldham, Red Kelly,
Marcel Pronovost, Marty Pavelich, Ted Lindsay, Sid
Abel , Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Jack Stewart,
Norm Ullman and Bill Gadsby.
List hockey schools
The February 15 edition of the Hockey News
contains a complete list of all of the hockey schools,
available in Canada and the United States.
The list of schools with complete information as to
dates. fees facililities, etc., covers two full pages in
the Hockey News.
Of the schools listed 22 are in Canada and 23
located in the United States. The best known one of
course in this area is the Huron Hockey School at
Huron%Park.
The school at Huron Park operated out of the
Stephen township arena is one of the better schools in
existence and year after year draws a large number of
young pros and junior stars recently drafted by NHL
clubs.
It was started some eight years ago by Brian
Gilmour. Bill Mahoney and Ron Mason, Gilmour is
still the school director.
Surprisingly enough there is an Exeter hockey
school. Before anyone get's excited, it's in Exeter,
New Hampshire.
Good returns
Directors of the South Huron Big Brothers
Association are very pleased with their financial
returns from the recent all star game of the South
Huron intermediate hockey league.
Tuesday afternoon league president John Stephens
turned over a cheque for $943 to Jim Chapman, presi-
dent of the local Big Brothers chapter.
In turn. Chapman said his group will be turning
half of the amount to the Goderich chapter of Big
Brothers.
This was the second consecutive year that Big
Brothers have profitted from the all star game. It was
played in Zurich a few weeks ago. Each year the all
stars play in the home rink of the defending cham-
pions.
While talking about the South Huron hockey loopwe
would like to say as we have in the past few years that
the league governors should be proud of the way the
league is operating.
The brand of hockey dished up is excellent and the
league itself is first class. Started a few years ago by
fellows like John Ainsley and John Stephens, the
league has been strong on constitution and have run a
very tight ship.
This depth of leadership was demonstrated a few
weeks ago when the Thedford team was tossed out of
the League because of the use of in'eligible players.
Keep up the good work.
