Dinner set
Last week we said that officials of the Exeter
Lions club were continually coming up with bigger and
better programs' for their annual Sportsmen's dinners,
When that remark was made we didn't realize that a
very Important local flavour was being added to this
year's popular event.
For the first time in the seven year history of the
dinner an area crippled child has the honour of
representing all of the crippled children of not only
Western Ontario, but, of the entire province.
The honour goes to 11 year-old Christine Easter-
brook of RR 3, Exeter. Christine is a grade five stu-
dent at Hensall Public School and we know will handle
her job on February 5 very capably and enthusiastical-
ly. tl
Along with Christine, one of the area's top figure
skaters will also be in attendance. Laurie Prout will
represent the world of figure skating and we hope she
fellows in the footsteps of two of the guests at the
dinner last year.
Lori Baler and Lloyd Eisler of Mitchell and
Seaforth, respectively won a Canadian championship
last week in Kitchener.
At the same time, Laurie Prout and her partner Bill
Scriver of London placed sixth in the novice pairs
dance championship.
This is the first time a member of the Exeter
figure skating club has *qualified for a dominion wide
event and their finish with 15 other entries is very en-
couraging for the future.
To qualify for the Canadian final Laurie and Bill
were required to finish in the top four in the Central
Ontario divisional competitions held in Sudbury in
December, The top four from each of the divisions
made the national finals in Kitchener.
Figure skating is one sport which requires a very
long and rigid training program. Laurie and Bill have
been practicing two hours every day for six days a
week since early September to get ready for the
biggest event of their young lives.
That's a lot of effort and along with determination
and dedication it has proved very worthwhile. We '
would like to wish the skating pair the best of luck in
their future endeavours.
Back to the Sportsmen's dinner, tickets are still
available and are $25 for adults and $15 for students.
They can be obtained from any Exeter Lion, dinner
chairman George Godbolt or Dick Jongkind here at the
T: A. Receipts will be issued for income tax purposes.
The most important fact of the dinner is that all
proceeds go to aid crippled children in many ways.
These include the London Crippled Children's Treat-
ment Centre and Camp Woodeden which Christine
Bi;asterbrook "attended last summer.
In addition to the headline speaker former Yankee
Bobby Richardson, baseball will be represented by
Gary Carter of the Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue
Jay Rick Bosetti. From football come Reggie Rucker
of the Cleveland Browns and Toronto Argonaut Terry
Metcalfe,
Former NHL referee and Canadian football great
Red Storey will be here and he is an excellent speaker
and comedian by his own admission.
In addition to Laurie Prout, the female side of
sports will be well represented by track and field stars
Debbie Brill 'and Patricia Loverock.
Putting the show all together will be master of
ceremonies Craig Baynham. He gained stardom with
the Dallas Cowboys a few years back.
More fun coming up
If anyone is interested in seeing hockey far from
its best we would recommend a visit to the Hensall
arena on Saturday night, February 2.
On this special occasion, the hockey team from
CFPL television and radio will be meeting the Hensall
arena fund raising committee.
The Team' 10 roster will include such notables as
Jack Burghardt, Bill Hutchings, Alex Kellman, Gail
Eva to name only a few.
If Team 10 thinks they may have a runaway with a
bunch of fund raisers they have another thing coming.
First of all we would like to warn their forwards
that they will be facing NHL calibre goal tending in
Ron "Milky" Mock. Before reaching the goal they will
have to contend with fellows like John "Boobs" Baker,
Bevan "Slash" Bonthron, Bob "Orange Power"
Caldwell, Eric "The Rocket" Luther and the mayor
himself Harold "Coog" Knight.
Wearing the striped sweaters and trying to keep
the combatants under control will be Murray
"Smudge" Baker and Harry "Dizzy" Moir.
Coaching the speedy Hensall aggregation will be
Paul "Punch" Neilands. Doug "Abe" Shirray is the
trainer, the timekeeper will be Tom "Bookie" Munroe
and Wayne ,5Wally" Reid is the manager.
All in all it should be a good night of fun with all
proceeds going to the Hensall arena fund. A few weeks
ago, the rink in Thedford was jammed when Team 10
appeared, so take our adVice and get there early.
Eric "The Rocket" Luther reports that tickets
will be sold at the arena doors only. No advance tickets
will be available.

Hugh Mitchell of the Jets who now lives in Exeter
