Popular events coming up
Two interesting and popular sporting events in this
area are coming up in the very near future. •
First of all, the seventh annual Exeter Lions Club
Sportsmen's dinner is set for Tuesday, February 5 and
the annual carnival of the Exeter figure skating dub is
set for Saturday, March 1.
This is the second last time that we will be able to
talk about the Sportsmen's dinner in this column.
Chairman George Godbolt and his hard working corn-
xnittee appear to have come up with an excellent
lineup of celebrities and speakers.
Each year we say, "This was the best dinner to
date and it will be hard to come close again next year,
hut, somehow or other the Lions wave their magic
wands and the program is bigger and better than ever,
This year there will actually be two• top notch
speakers. Former New York Yankee great second
baseman Bobby Richardson is listed as the keynote
speaker, but, we would guess that the speaker next on
the program will be just as interesting an humorous.
We are talking about former NHL referee Vernon
"Red" Storey who also left his marks, as a star
backfielder in the good old days of Canadian senior
football.
Storey is also quickly becoming a popular colour
commentator on NHL television and radio broadcasts.
The fellow behind the Santa Claus whiskers on the
Hockey Night in Canada telecasts each Christmas is
none other than Red Storey.
Back to the Sportsmen's Dinner lineup, Rick
Rossetti of the Toronto Blue Jays has been added and
he could be joined by one or two others from that
organization.
Gary Carter, the first string catcher with the Mon-
treal Expos will be along with Reggie Rucker of the
Cleveland Browns football club and two top female
track and field athletes in Patricia Loverock and Deb-
bie Brill.
The master of ceremonies for the dinner will be
farmer Dallas Cowboy Greg Baynhain who is now a
minister at a London Church and has long been a
strong supporter of Christian Athlete organizations.
Tickets for the dinner remain at $25 and part of
this amount can be claimed on your income tax return.
They may be obtained from George Godbolt or any
member of the local Lions club.
We should possibly clarify the ticket prices. That's
$25 for adults and $15 for students. Remember, all
proceeds go to an excellent cause, crippled children.
Back to the figure skating club carnival on March
1. This year the club has 162 boys and girls registered
for regular activities. This is the largest group in quite
a f.ew years. •
The carnival is one of the two opportunitiei of-
ficials of the club have .to raise money for their ac-
tivities. The other is the annual club dance which is set
for Saturday, February 2.
A close prediction
In case anyone is interested, we were very close in
our prediction of Sunday's Super Bowl football game.
The Pittsburgh Steelers made us look good with a 31
point production, but, the Rams scored six points more
than they should have to make this writer's prediction
correct. We guessed 31-13 for the Steelers.
Overtime may come back to the National Hockey
league in the very near future as team governors dis-
cuss the subject.
Of the 467 NHL games played up to Saturday night,
77 ended in ties which is about 17 percent. If these
games had gone the extra 10 minutes of overtime, fans
in the 21 cities would have seen an extra 13 hours of
entertainment.
Overtime would certainly have had an effect on
the Philadelphia Flyers unbeaten streak. With 12 ties-
during their streak, the Flyers record could have gone
to 45 or cut a whole lot quicker.
An extra 10 minutes wouldn't have helped the
Toronto Maple Leafs very much. In their first 44
games, the Leafs could manage only four ties while
losing 22 times.
The Buffalo Sabres share the tie low with the
Leafs but are higher in the standings with 62 points, 22
more than Toronto.
Good effort
A graduate of the Exeter figure skating Club turn-
ed in an excellent performance in the Canadian cham-
pionships which concluded in Kitchener over the
weekend.
Laurie Prout combined with William Scriver of
London to finish sixth in the novice pairs dance Com-
petition. There were 15 entries.
Laurie is the daughter of Jim and Ann Prout, RR
1, Centralia and a grade 12 student at South Huron
District High School.
