Colour Change
The Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey
League have decided to change their uniform colours
this year to match those worn by other professional
sports teams in that city.
The Penguins will change from white and two
shades of blue to black and gold to match the Pirates,
Steelers and Spirit.
While talking about the Steelers we will throw in a
prediction of Sunday Super Bowl game. How about
Pittsburgh 31 Los Angeles 13?

Saints post shutout
over Mohawks
The Centralia College
Saints scored an impressive
5-0 victory over the Exeter
Mohawks in South Huron
intermediate hockey league
play at the Stephen township
arena, Monday.
The same two teams will
engage in a return game at
the South Huron Rec Centre
tomorrow night, Thursday.
The South Huron league all
star game will be played
Friday night at the Zurich
arena with the northern
teams taking on those from
the south.
Scoring in the Exeter-
College game was restricted
to the late stages of the
second period and the third.
The only goal of the middle
frame came at 17.20 on an
unassisted effort by Ken
Vanos.
At 8.19 of the third period,
Ed Michniewicz upped the
score to 2-0 on a three-way
combination with captain
Marty Becker and George
Black.
With seven minutes
remaining, Rick Vanos
converted a pass from Ed
Michniewicz and at 16.26,
Michniewicz again assisted
on a successful shot by Ken
Vanos.21 seconds left,
ith
only Michniewicz picked up his
fourth point of the night as he
hit the mark with the assist
going to Mike Sadler.
•
latter crew took 4,3-2 lead in
the first and were never
headed although Exeter
stayed close throughout in an
evenly contested match.
Paul Haggitt, Dan Bell and.
Dwight Consitt scored for
Exeter, with assists going to
Dave Atthill and Terry
Caldwell,
Steve Wells had 22 saves in
the Exeter nets, while Dave
Fischer had, 24 for the home
team in a game 'that saw 17
minor penalties: Mitchell had
, nine of those.
The winners scored on two
power play attempts, while
Exeter converted one' of
their extra man situations.
Two very popular events in this area scheduled for
this coming‘ weekend may be in jeopardy of being
completed successfully without some help from the
weatherman.
Slated for this weekend are winter weekends at
South Huron District High School and , Centralia
College of Agricultural Technology.
Both schools have some indoor events planned but
the major items on the agenda are scheduled for out-
doors.
Contests such as snow sculpturing, tobogganing,
skiing, etc. need a fair amount of the white stuff which
has been very scarce,
This winter's. (?) weather has been so strange that
only those youngsters that received bicycles for
Christmas can actually use and enjoy their gifts. Only
in the last day or two could anTsmall ponds be found
safe for skating. There has been lots of water but not
enough of the freezing temperatures.
A visit to Grand Bend Sunday afternoon found the
river and lake completely open. A few banks of snow
had piled along the shore and at the end of the pier,
but, no ice whatsoever to hinder the progress of any
boats.
We may still regret any statements made about
the lack of now, but, at least it can't last too long with
the first day of ,spring slated for March 21. That's only
65 days until spring should sprung.
All star game set
The annual South Huron intermediate hockey
league all star game will be played Friday night of this
week at the Zurich arena.
The best of the northern division made up of teams
from Zurich, Goderich, Hensall, Exeter and Centralia
College will tackle the, cream of,the south with teams
from Centralia, Grand Bend, Parkhill, Kettle Point
and Thedford.
At the time of writing, the Zurich Buckeyes lead
the north division with 25 points and the Centralia
Marauders lead the south with 27 points.
Tomorrow night, Thursday, three excellent league
games are on tap. The tops should be at the Stephen
township arena where the two group leaders, the
Zurich Buckeyes and the Centralia Marauders meet.
Other games have Centralia College at Exeter to meet
the Mohawks and Parkhill travelling to Hensall.
Getting back to the all star game, all proceeds will
go to a-worthy cause, the South Huron Big Brothers
Association which helps fatherless boys.
Good fishing
In contrast to the lack of ice on Lake Huron, the
situation on Lake Simcoe is quite different with ice
fishing reported as excellent.
In a story in Saturday's Toronto Star, perch were
• described as thicker than hairs on a dog's back near
Port Bolster on the southeast shore of Lake Simcoe.
The ice on Lake Simcoe is now eight inches thick
allowing fishing huts to be placed one mile from shore.
If anyone is interested we have the name and
phone number of one of the Lake Simcoe fishing
operators. Driving time from Exeter to the fishing
areas would be about three hours. The cost for each
person ranges from $10 to $14 depending on the dis-
tance from shore.
The playoff picture in the
northern, division of the
Western Junior "D" loop
became more scrambled this
week, indicating that there
will be a real battle for the
various positions as the
season slowly winds down.
The Exeter Hawks• find
themselves in; third place as
a result of a win and tie in
three outings this week, but
that's not as comforting as it
may appear although the
Hawks have been in the
cellar for part of the season.
In fact, they're tied with
Seaforth for the third spot
and Tavistock Braves are
only one point behind as the
three teams scramble for the
final two playoff positions.
Meanwhile, the Mitchell
Hawks dumped the Liman
Irish out of first place, after
the latter had led for most of
the season, The Irish were
beaten twice by Seaforth this
week by scores of 3-2 and 12-6
and will have to get back on
earlier form if they hope to
capture the top spot.
The Hawks have only six
games remaini'ng in the
schedule and only two of
those are on home ice, They
have completed their
schedule against Seaforth, so
will need some help from<
some other teams to finish
arena at Huron Park. The
league all star game will be
played Friday night in
Zurich.

cond of play before the

dy Somerville and Pete
Glover and Randy Somer-
ville tied the score two
minutes later on an un-
assisted effort.

the second period, Cec

from Dennis Carty and Ron

cond period.

top scorer for Centralia with
three goals and two assists.
Blair Hearn was next with
two goals and single
successful shots were fired
by Cec Nickles, Mark

TWo of the six games are
against Tavistock, but both
are on the Braves home ice,
and the Hawks will have to
win those to 'assure them-
selves of playoff spot or.. get
some help from, some other
teams to keep the. Braves at.
