While the recent Toronto. Maple Leaf trades are
still keeping many sports fans buzzing, the swap a
month or two ago between the Montreal Expos and
Detroit Tigers was also very important.
Some Detroit Tiger fans were shocked to hear that
their favorite .centre fielder and base stealer for
several years was headed to the National league and
the ExpoS.
Ron LeFiore had become sort of a fixture in the
Tiger lineup ever since he got an early parole from
Southern Michigan prison in 1973.
In six full seasons with the Tigers, LeFlore es-
tablished a batting average of .293 and stole close to
300 bases.
When the trade was announced, Tiger manager
Sparky Anderson commented, "The Expos will win
their pennant next year with LeFlore's speed being a
big advantage."
Harold "Batch" Wolfe who has built up a reputa-
tion as the most dedicated Tiger fan in this part of the
country was shocked by the trade.
A few days later Wolfe had recovered and in-
dicated his allegiance had switched to Montreal and
was planning an October vacation to attend the World
Series at Olympic Stadium.
We would like to share Wolfe's enthusiasm that
LeFlore will give the Expos the momentum they need.
But, would caution that the Pittsburgh Pirates and
their strong man Willie Stargell may have some say in
the 1980 National league champion.
The Expos apparently are banking on LeFlore
making the big difference in being a close contender
and a winner this year. It's an all or nothing shot this
year as LeFlore is expected to become a free agent for
the next season and he will probably head back to an
American team for bigger bucks.
Interesting interview
While flipping the television dial between halves of
the football games Sunday we hit for a few moments a
flashback sports program.
One of the stars of yesterday appearing was Bill
Cowley of the Boston Bruins of 40 years ago. Cowley
was in his prime at the time of fellows like Eddie
Shore, Tiny Thompson and the Kraut line of Milt
Schmidt, Woody Dumart and Bobby Bauer.
Bill Cowley was best known for his great stick
handling and playmaking ability. He suggested that
Bobby Orr was the best hockey player he has ever seen
and Eddie Shore was second. It's funny that both were
Boston Bruins.
As a member of the 1940 Stanley Cup champions,
Cowley said he received $11,000. His basic salary that
year was $4.500.
There has been quite a change in salaries for
athletes over the past 40 years. Those were the days
when player agents were unheard of and each athlete
negotiated his own contract.
Cowley said in the interview Sunday that one year
he went to the boss for a raise asking for the same
salary as star goalie Tiny Thompson. He was surprised
to find that his own salary was higher than that of
Thompson.
After watching the show we dug out our collection
of NHL hockey pictures some of which go back as far
as 45 years ago.
We were able to find pictures of Cowley, Shore,
ThOiripspn, Schmidt, Bauer and Dumart along with
many others of those days and some more recent.
Our moits-,Kized possessions and probably the
oldest are team pictures of the Montreal Maroons and
Montreal Canadiens of 'the 1934-35 season, We also
have individual pictures of • Aurel Joliat and Sylvio
Mantha of the same Montreal era.
Our oldest Toronto Maple Leaf pies include King
Clancy, Hap Day, Red Horner, Bill Thoms, Buss Boll,
Charlie Conacher, Turk Broda, Andy Blair, Busher
Jackson, Art Metz, Don Metz and Bob Davidson.
Our team picture of the Maroons of 1934-35 does
not contain any names, so, if anyone else has a similar
picture with names we would certainly appreciate
hearing from you. The Canadiens team roster is iden-
tified,
Dinner closer
Don't look now, but, the 1980 Exeter Lions club
Sportsmen's dinner is only four weeks away.
The date is Tuesday, February 5 at the South
Huron Rec Centre and an excellent list of sporting
celebrities have been lined up.
Just a reminder that the two headline speakers are
former New York Yankee great second baseman Bob-
bie Richardson and former NHL referee Red Storey.
Chairman George Godbolt and his hard working
committee expect to have representatives from the
Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers to go with Gary
Carter of the Montreal Expos.
On the subject of hockey, one Lion who shall re-
main anonymous said, "We don't know whether to get
a Toronto Maple Leaf or a hockey player."

Now it's the Law.
You can no longer
drive without
insurance.
The Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act came into effect on
December 1st,1979. Now Ontario residents must have insurance to
register any motor vehicle. Drivers can no longer pay $150 into the
Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Fund and register a vehicle without
insurance. The MVAC Fund did not provide insurance; it compen-
sated the victim of an accident and made the driver responsible for
payment of the claim.
The deadline for car registration renewal is February 29,1980.
To register any motor vehicle you must have a minim` of u.ii
$100,000 third party liability insurance. If you want more info anon
