one I remember for a long

was green. Some of you may
recall that. I asked Santa for
a new car this year. lie

escapade on Christmas Day
was not the fault of the car;
it was the fault of the gas,
and I refuse to listen to
anymore wise cracks about
my auto, since I've decided
we're going to be together
for a few more years,
Fieldcrest

car was lurching and slowing
noticeably. Then suddenly it
gathered steam and we took
off smoothly again,
"Are you doing that?" my
mother, who had hitched a
ride, asked.
"Not intentionally!" I
grunted,
We spotted Dad's carload
about a half mile Ahead. I
was able to catch up, flag
him down, and after a
hurried conference, he
decided to follow me in case
the car acted up again.
It did. Every time I slowed
to a corner or stopped at a
light, the motor stalled. The
car eased onto the shoulder
of the road; Dad followed; I
revved the motor and our
double caravan took off
again.
Fortunately we didn't have
to drive through the city, just
around the edge. But even
that was a little hectic. Our
closest call came when my
stall on a left turn caused
Dad to go through a red light.
"If he gets a ticket, I'll pay
it," I muttered. It seemed
the appropriate thing to say.
The drive took two hours;
it usually requires about an
hour and a quarter. It wasn't
snow that slowed me down.
After dinner, my oldest
nephew and I took my car for
a spin. I steered while he
handled the accelerator. We
thought if we could just give
it a good run our problems
would be over. At one point, I
told him to lay off the gas.
"I'm not touching the gas;
I thought you were," he said.
And that's when we realized
the gas pedal was stuck.
It was one of the most
interesting drives I've taken.
We got back to the house
safely, diagnosed the
trouble as water in the gas
line, poured in some alcohol
(into the car not me) and I
headed for home in the early
evening with Dad close
behind.
My car sounded fine for
about five minutes. The next
half consisted of pumping
and chugging and revving
and urging from me: "Come
on baby; you can make it!"
Once I glanced in the rear
view mirror to discover
Dad's car lights had
disappeared. Far back in the
Sale
distance two amber lights
were flashing. We got gas
front the same pump, you
see.
To make a long story
short, both cars started one
more time, but I gave up on
mine about half way home
when it began stopping at
every mile.Luckily I. wasable
to limp into a cousin's farm
yard, which became an
overnight parking spot.
Everyone crammed into
Dad's car wondering how far
we'd get. With a few stops
and starts, a lot of coughing
and pumping, the car limped
into Dad and Mom's yard.
The next day Dad, my

winter vegetables, say the
food specialists at the
Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
Winter vegetables, also
known as root vegetables,
are so named because they
store very well and are
therefore available all
winter long. They include
carrots, onions, rutabagas,
potatoes and parsnips.
Winter vegetables are
readily available at your
local supermarket. Since
large quantities of these
vegetables are grown in
Ontario, excellent com-
mercial storage facilities are
available. These storage
areas are equipped to
maintain the good qualities
of the vegetables throughout
the winter months.
Because winter vegetables
store well, good supplies are
easy to keep on hand to use in
winter cooking. At home,
store carrots, parsnips and
rutabagas in a cool, moist
area, or refrigerate. Store
potatoes and onions in a cool,
dry, dark, airy place, Don't
wash the vegetables until
you use them. Under the
proper storage conditions,
winter vegetables will keep
for several weeks. If you
don't have the proper
storage facilities, buy only
what you can store properly,
and then buy more later.
Include Ontario's winter
vegetables often in your
meals this season, for
delicious flavor and variet ARM SUPERIOR FOOD MARKET yst.
