Conservative MP for
Lambton Middlesex Sid
Fraleigh is seeking his
party's nomination to rnn in
February 18 federal election.
Fraleigh told the T-A from
his h9ine in Port Franks that
he doesn't know of any other
people seeking the PC
nomination,.
The Tories nomination
meeting is scheduled for
Wednesday, January 9 at the
Brooke-Alvinston arena in
Alvinston, Prime minister
Joe Clark will be guest
speaker at the meeting.
Fraleigh said that he was
"some surprised" at the
defeat of the government,
along with the rest of
Canada. He added that he
had no idea until noon that
day that the opposition was
seriously thinking about
bringing the government
down.
Fraleigh says that since
then, he has found out that
the electorate is mad at all
politicians. "Where that
anger settles will determine
the outcome of the election,"
he said.
Fraleigh called a winter
election "disastrous", and
pointed out that somewhere
in Canada there will
probably be severe weather
conditions that, day. "We're
encouraging older people to
take advantage of advanced
poles,"he said. Fraleigh is
also concerned about the
number of people away on
holidays for the winter. He
agreed that a poling booth in
Florida might be beneficial.
Fraleigh defended finanee
minister John Crosbie's
budget, saying that it was
very realistic. He said that
there were some parts that
people wouldn't like, but it
was time to "bite the bullet".
He thinks that most people
realize that we need a tough
budget, and he said that no
matter which party won the
election they would have to
come up with a similar
budget, "Anyone who didn't
(have a tough budget) would
be courting disaster," he
said,
Liberal association riding
president Bill Swan of
Watford said that there are
several "good" men in-
terested in the position of
Liberal candidate. He said
