He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex Smith of Hensall. Survived by his wife Muriel (Hurst) Smith, son David of Massillon, Ohio, and daughter Mrs. David Krueger (Sharon) of Flushing, Michigan. Brother of Mrs. M.B. Parker, London and Eldrid, London. Predeceased by three sisters Mrs. John Craig (Ida) Mrs. Alex Smith (Laura) Blyth, Ontario, and Mrs. D. McPherson, (Lena) Por- tland, Oregon and three brothers Dr. David T. of Omer, Michigan. William of Pangman Sask. and J. Alexander of Fort Benton, Montana. Funeral service was held from the Rosell Funeral Chapel Flushing, Michigan at 1.00 p.m. on Monday December 17. Three links have good time A bountiful Christmas Pot- Luck turkey supper was thouroughlylenjoyedbyover50 seniors, members of the Three Links Senior Citizens ' Club of Hensall on Tuesday evening. The evening was completed by singing carols, a reading by Mrs. Harold Parker, and an inspiring address by Rev. Stan McDonald. Henry Adkins favoured with two pieces on the mouthorgan and Mrs. Carl Payne sang a Christmas number, "The friendly beasts". Mrs. Bertha McGregor conducted the business, welcoming all present. In the correspondence, two in- vitations were received, one from the Kinsmen of Hensall and District, inviting all to a gathering in the public school on the evening of December 18, and another from Kippen East Women's Institute to a noon dinner on January 16 ; names to be in to secretary Mrs.lrene Davis by January 9. Winter trips for Seniors are being arranged; literature available from Mrs. Davis. Several copies of "Voice" were distributed and with unanimous support it was decided to become a "Star" club in U.S.C.O. A donation will be made towards the tArena fund. Zone eight Spring Rally will be held inHensallat the United Church on Wed- nesday, April 30. Mrs. !McGregor wished all a very Merry Christmas. Decorations in the hall were much admired and all who had helped in any way towards the success of the evening were warmly thanked. Rev. McDonald was presented with a small gift by Mrs. McGregor. Hostesses were Mrs. Gertie Moir, Mrs. Ruby Bell and Mrs. Irene Davis assisted by the executive and entertainment was arranged by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Payne and Mrs. Bertha McGregor. The residents of the Queensway Nursing Home are most grateful to their families who visited with them and enjoyed the Christmas Party and especially Santa Claus who dropped in with treats. Visitors with Mac Beaver were Stella Taylor and Ella Willert. Mrs. Mary Hogan, Mrs. Mary Holtzman, Les Mitchell and daughter Barbara and friend and Robert Mitchell visited with Louise Mitchell. Mrs. Jessie Ingle and Mrs. Geo Blake visited with Cora Alcock. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Whilhelm, Cathy and Steve Davidson and Gordon visited Mrs. Edna Youn. Mr. and Mrs. Durand and family visited with Nell Kendrick. Mr. Don Roxendal visited his wife Alice also Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Kraft Irene Finlayson, Ruby Finlayson and Vera Johnston visited Mrs. Volland. Mrs. Stanley visited with Alex Barrett. Visiting with Len Purdy was his wife Susan, Mrs. Pfaff visited with her husband Horace also Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Pfaff of Exeter visited with Horace. Bob Dale visited with Agnes Cutting. Rev. Loshbough conducted the church service ac- companied at the piano by Louise Mitchell, Men's high bowling was Neil Regan with 143 and Ladies' high score was Mary Parlmer with 78. I. donates to church The Christmas meeting of the Hensall Women's Institute was held in the Fellowship Hall of the United Church on Wednesday, with the past president, Mrs. Carl Payne, in the chair. A letter from Miss Brenda Kisyk, assistant home economist, was read about her pending transfer to the West and the group decided to send a card expressing our good wishes and thanks for her interest while in Huron County. It Was also decided to donate to the church both for the privilege of holding the 4Hmeetings there and for holding our monthly meetings at the church. An important item discussed was the date of the January meeting which is to be January 15 a Tuesday, in- stead of the usual second Wednesday All members please make a note of this. Mrs, Cliff Britton and Mrs. John Skea were in charge of the programme which Management and staff wish all o friends and customers: A Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, Walt Tiedeman, Bud Preszcator, Wayne Parkinson, Betty Johnston, Joe Bailey. McDonald saw Carrie 'Elizabeth, Stuart and Ryan David Stuart presented for baptismhy their Parents,,Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stuart of Exeter with witnesses Peter McLeod and Vickie Skrabek, closing the ceremony with a solo by Mrs. Marianne McCaffrey, "Our Father, by Whose Name". Miss Schwarz, who has a beautifully clear soprano voice, sang "Wiegenlied" at the beginning of the service and "0, Divine Redeemer" by Gounod following the sermon and closed the service with "Bring to the Lord God" by Schutz. She also gave a beautiful solo, "Let there Be Peace on Earth" first on the flute and then sang the words, ac- companing her self on the guitar following the offering. PRIZE WINNERS AT HENSALL SKATEATHON — The top three money raisers for-the skateathon held to raise funds for the Hensall and district community centre received their prizes Monday. Handing out the cheques to Dan McGlinchey, Starr Jesney and Steve McCullough were fund raising committee members Carl McMahon and Eric Luther. T-A photo Residents at Queensway enjoy Christmas visits opened with all singing, "0 Come, all ye Faithful", "Joy to the World" and "0 Little Town of Bethlehem", Mrs. Elizabeth Riley gave a reading, "The message of Christmas" and then Mrs. Eric Luther and Mrs. Cliff Britton sang a beautiful duet. Following that, Mrs. John Skea read "Christmas in America" and then Mrs. Cliff Britton read the story of the Christmas Rose of Saint Agnes and how it came to be adopted for Christmas. To finish the evening, two more carols were sung. "The First Noel" and "'Silent Night". Mrs. Payne closed the meeting and then Christmas lunch was served by hostess Mrs, Carl Payne and com- mittee, Mrs. William Rogerson, Miss Greta Laramie and Mrs. Annie Reid. Present Christmas Concert The United Church was filled on Sunday evening when the Sunday School children and young people presented their annual Christmas concert, under the direction of the teachers and staff. Mrs. Melvin Wurm was mistress of ceremonies and also in charge of organizing the concert. Rev. McDonald opened the evening with prayer, and the evening was interspersed with the singing of the Christmas Carols. The concert opened with a welcome by Christine Rose and Rick Totip., The nursery class, under the leadership of Mrs. Bill Scotchmer stole the hearts of the audience as they sang, "Away in a Manger""Whenwe're happy and we know it" and "Jingle Bells"; alsp played their rhythem band instruments through these songs. The kindergarten class, under Mrs. Ross Veal, gave a song-recitation entitled, "Christmas". The primarydepartment, under Mrs. Cecil Pepper and Mrs. Gerald Traquair ,presented the "Signs of Christmas." Mrs . Wurm's class of thirteen junior • boys, presented, "Behold the star" while the play for the con- cert, entitled "The Shepherd's Story" was presented by the in- termediate classs under the direction of George Parker and Ann Rose. They were assisted by the junior class as choir. At the close of the programme, Santa paid his visit to the enjoyment of the children, and passed out gifts and candy bags. Scott and Starr Jesney were greeters at the door and Rev. McDonald pronounced the benediction. Senior citizens night The Ilensall and District Kinsmen Club sponsored a senior citizens night again this year at the Hensall Public School' on Tuesday evening at 7.30 p.m. Films and entertainment were much enjoyed by all and a social time was had when lunch was served. New treasurer The Christmas meeting of unit two of Hensall United Church Women was held on December 10 with fifteen members present Mrs. Elva Forrest took the chair in the place of Mrs. Anne Brock and opened with a poem chosen by Anne, Mrs. Grace Drummond conducted the devotional, reading a story about the gifts that are free at Christmas time, peace, freedom, prosperity. Christmas hymns were sung. The business was con- ducted by Mrs. Diane Gerstenkorn who displayed literature sent out by the Canadian Bible society during the past twelve months and it was decided to write and find out more more about how the Society works, The new leader for unit two will be Mrs. Joyce Pepper and Mrs. Eleanor Mansfield will take over Joyce's duties as treasurer, Diane thanked everybody for their support during her two years as leader and Elva presented her with a gift in appreciation of her leadership. Mrs. Drummond suggested that we help the Christian Blind Mission during 1980 with unanimous approval. Mrs. Anne Brockgave a report of the Friendship committee. In place of astudy, Mrs. Gerstenkorn presented a sketch, "The Spirit of Christmas." Taking part were Mrs. Gerstenkorn, Mrs. Brock, Mrs. Hazel Corbett, Mrs.Mansfield, Mrs. Jean Wareing, Mrs. Forrest and Mrs. Helen MacLean. Personals Mrs. Clarence Reid who has been a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter returned to her home on Saturday. Mr. Tom Kelly ad- ministration manager at the local Bank of Montreal left last week for a holiday with relatives and friends in Nova Scotia. Mr. Brad Sangster who was a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter returned home last week. Mrs. Don Luther, Rachel, and Adam of St. Johns, Newfoundland visited last week with the former's father-in-law and mother-in- law Mr. and Mrs. Eric Luther, Mrs. Sarah Simpson is a patient in South Huron Hospital where she ' is receiving treatment. Mrs. Hazel Luther returned home last week after visiting with her granddaughter and grand- son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Raeburn at Coronation Alberta. The Hensall Kinettes entertained the K40 club to dinner at the Burkley Restaurant Exeter on Wednesday evening, followed by a social time at the home of Mrs. Steve Knight. Bags of candies were packed for the "Free Skating" sponsored at the arena Sunday afternoon, by the Kinettes. Santa Claus arrived and treated the children. Mrs. Laird Mickle, Mrs. Florence Joynt along with Mr. and Mrs. William Mickle and John of Exeter attended the Mickle Christmas Family Gathering at the home of the former's daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs RossMacMillanand family in Waterloo on Sunday. There were over twenty present for the oc- casion. A lovely wedding took place in the United Church on Saturday, afternoon when Deborah Lea Miller married Constable Cameron Frederick Moggach of Waterloo. Our congratulations to Debbie, a former resident of Hensall. Following the wedding an informal reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Luther. Mrs. Laird Mickle and Mrs Florence Joynt, along. with Mr. and Mrs. William Mickle, Exeter, attended the Christmas Gathering at the home of the former's daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ross MacMillan and family, Waterloo on Sunday. There were over 20 present for the occasion. Jordie Smith of London has been spending the weekend with his grand- parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Smith. Mr. and Mrs. George Lockwood of Mesa, Arizona, are spending the Christmas holiday season with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Elder.
