Lose a pair
The Waxers were less than
awesome in a couple of pre-
tournament warmup games
this weekend. They were
drubbed 14-1 in Mt. Brydges
on Saturday and then lost 11-
1 in Lambeth the following
night.
David Dalrymple scored
the lone Exeter goal on a
play with Laurie Chalmers,
He deked around one
defender and then drilled a
low shot to the open corner.
Defencemen Larry Lewis
and Jeff Chipchasc had only
one rest each in the game.
Laurie Chalmers scored
the only goal against Mt.
Brydges when he took a pass
from David JoscaiN):1 and

third period.
The locals had only one
substitute on the bench when.
they tackled Lambeth and
the short-handed crew came
up with a . strong perfor-

steam late in the second
period. At that point, they
trailed only 2-1.

A sweet impression
An area harness racing horse made a sweet im-
pression on the Canadian racing world in 1979 and was
honoured for all of her accomplishments.
We are talking about Sweet Impression a three
year-old trotting filly owned by Doug Courtney and his
Wheeling By Stables of Grand Bend.
Sweet Impression was named three year-old trot-
ting filly of the year by the Canadian Trotting Associa-
tion.
The Grand Bend based filly earned more than
$100,000 during 1979 with nine victories and seven
seconds in 18 starts. Included was a new lifetime
record of 2.03,
Doug Courtney tells us Sweet Impression will
probably be making one more racing start this year
before being bred to the trotting sire Soncan at Pine
Hollow Stud Farms in Pine Bush, New York.
Good gift suggestion
If you are looking for an idea for a sports fan on
your Christmas list we have a suggestion and it won't
take long to do the shopping.
How about a ticket to the Exeter Lions club
Sportsmen's dinner scheduled for the South Huron Rec
Centre on Tuesday, February 5?
Top sporting celebrities have again been lined up
and the upcoming event should be as good or better
than any of the six held in the past.
Former New York Yankee all star second
baseman Bobby Richardson will be the headline
speaker. Backing up Richardson will be one of the
mose exciting and controversial referee in National
Hockey League history, Red Storey.
Richardson who retired from his fabulous career
at the age of 31 was named to the American League all
star team seven times and holds the record of the most
runs batted-in during a World Series.
He is now associated with Ben Lippen School,
a ChristianHigh School in Asheville, North Carolina. In
addition he is very active with the Fellowship of Chris-
tian Athletes.
The master of ceremonies for the February 5
dinner will be former Dallas Cowboy and Chicago
Bear Craig Baynham who is also a strong supporter of
the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is currently a
minister in London,
Baseball will be represented by Gary Carter of the
Montreal Expos. Carter missed the last few weeks of
the 1979 schedule and his presence in the lineup could
have made a difference in the Expos stretch drive
which just fell short.
Chairman George Godbolt tells us that he expects
a representative of the Detroit Tigers to also appear.
Professional football will be well represented by
Terry Metcalf, a running back from the Toronto
Argonauts and Cleveland Browns wide reciever
Reggie Rucker.
This year the female side of sports will be well
represented by two world class track and fielders.
They are World Cup high jump champion Debbie Brill
and veteran nationalrecord holding sprinter Patricia
Loverock,
Tickets for the dinner are the same as in previous
years $25 for adults and $15 for students. They may be
purchased from any member of the Exeter Lions club.
George Godbolt is the dinner chairman.
Exciting action
Anyone with a few hours on their hands during the
festive season could do a lot worse than drop down to
the South Huron Rec Centre when the annual Exeter
novice hockey tournament is on.
A total of 13 teams from Western Ontario will be
participating in the two day event in three divisions.
The tournament gets underway Boxing Day,
Wednesday, December 26 at 9 a.m. Eight games in the
"B" and "AA" sections will be played Wednesday
while the "A" division teams battle it out Thursday.
The Exeter Waxers will play their first game at 9
a.m. Thursday with Goderich supplying the opposition.
Other clubs in the "A" classification are Strathroy,
Listowel, Hanover, Elmira, Byron and Walkerton.
South London and Oakridge will compete for the
"AA" title on Wednesday in a two game total goals
series. Competing in the "B" division will be Parkhill,
Mitchell, Dorchester, Seaforth and Lambeth.
Where is the liniment?
After donning the blades as one of the officials in
the oldtimers game at the Stephen township arena Sun-
day night we could use a bottle or two of liniment.
Seriously, it was a real fun time for everyone who
attended the official transfer of the arena from the On-
tario Development Corporation to the township.
ODC manager Jack Malone summed the situation
up well when he said, "The arena is back. where it
should be in the hands of the public."
The arena originally called the Randall arena was
built in 1963 by funds contributed by the officers and
men of the then RCAF Centralia base. When the air
force base closed it was taken over by ODC.
The highlight of Sunday's program was the old-
timers hockey game in which the best of the west prov-
ed to be just that as they defeated a team from the east
by a score of 8-1.
A few extra penalties administered against the
west by the two very just officials failed to help much
on the scoreboard.
All in all it was a very fun night arid we believe
there were quite a few spectators making their first
visit to the arena. Now we hope all of Stephen township
will make use of the fine facility both as a participant
and a spectator.
The Exeter Hawks scored
a pair of wins on home ice
over the weekend to reclaim
the fourth and final playoff
apot in the northern division
of the Junior "D" loop.
The four points gave them
a one-point lead over
Seaforth in the battle for the
final playoff position,
although the Centenaires
have three games in hand
over Exeter crew.
After dropping a 7-2 ver-
dict to Lucan. Wednesday,
the Hawks nipped Bothwell
by a 4-2 count in a rugged
tilt, Friday, and then came
up with their biggest goal
production of the season
The Seaforth midgets will
be playing host to a touring
Denmark hockey club.
The game is scheduled for
Tuesday, January 1, at the
Seaforth Arena, starting at
3:00 p.m.
The Denmark team is
from "VOJENS" and con-
sists of eight midgets and
twelve bantam aged players.
Advance tickets are
available at several Seaforth
There are few sporting
events left where the fans
are guaranteed more than
their money's worth, but
that's what will be in store
for those who take in the an-
nual novice tournament
scheduled for the South
Huron rec centre next week.
About 250 seven and eight-
year-olds will be battling it
out for supremacy in three
divisions, and while their
skill levels are enough to
amaze most people, the
thrills, spills and enthusiasm
combine to make this brand
of hockey the most en-
joyable.
The two-day tournament
gets underway on Boxing
Day and will feature the
"B" and "AA" divisions.
Oakridge and South London
will battle for the latter in a

having a poor season to date,
the local kids have always
been able to come up with
some of their best perfor-

Other teams entered in the

Byron and Walkerton. Ac-

Choose any of the six Bolens snowthrowers, and when the weather outside is fright-
ful you can relax - and let it snow! You won't have to look forward to a long,
tedious, back-breaking lob of shoveling and scraping - not to mention the aching
muscles that come later • becouse your Bolens snowthrower makes all that a thing
of the past.
