The Exeter Hawks not only
halted their losing streak at
six games this week, they
put together two consecutive
victories to keep themselves
in contention in the northern
group of the Western Junior
"D" league.
Just when they appeared
to be in danger of getting
mired in the cellar, the
Hawks whipped Tavistock on
home ice, Friday, and then
posted a 7-5 win over Both-
well the following night.
Although they were beaten
12-5 by Mitchell last
Tuesday, that was the game
that saw the locals start to
turn things around.
They saw Mitchell score
seven unanswered goals in
the first period in that
contest, but raey came back
to play on even terms for the
next two periods and that
type of play continued into
their two winning efforts.
This week, they host Lucan
on Friday and then
Tavistock again on Sunday
after a mid-week game in
Belmont tonight.
The Hawks were hanging
on in the final period on
Friday as they posted their
first win of the season with a
5-4 triumph over the
Tavistock Braves. The latter
came close to knotting the
count in the final stanza, but
Steve Sararas came up with
several key saves to
preserve the win.
There was never more
than a one-goal difference
throughout the contest
although the Hawks held the
lead at all times.
Preston Dearing started
them off with a power play
goal in the first and Ken
Varley did the same early in
the second. Both of them
came back with goals in the
third to cap the win. Dan Bell
notched the single.
Bell, Rick Lindenfield and
Brad Taylor drew a pair of
assists each, while helping
out on one were Dwight
Consitt and Dearing.
Sararas made 25 stops in
recording the win, while Jim
Zimmer stopped 30 in
Tavistock nets. The Hawks
drew eight of the 14 penalties
and had two power play
goals scored against them.
Keep it going
In Bothwell, Saturday, the
Hawks came back from a 5-3
deficit early in the third
period to post their second
straight win with a 7-5
margin.
They evened the count
with two goals in the first
eight minutes of the final
stanza and then Dwight
Consitt popped the eventual
winner at the 14:01 mark and
Dan Bell added the in-
surance tally with just a
little under three minutes to
go.
Consitt also opened the
scoring for the Hawks in the
first for a two-goal effort,
while adding the other
singles were Dave Kinsman,
Ken Varley, Kerry Bedard
and Bryon Baker.
Preston Dearing drew
assists on two goals, while
helping on one each were
Bell, Terry Caldwell, Brad
Taylor, Kinsman, Bedard,
Dave Atthill and Consitt.
Steve Wells picked up the
win between the pipes,
stopping 25 shots, while Gene
McChesney was hammered
with 53 shots in total by the
surging Hawks.
Bothwell won the penalty
parade with nine of the 17
called, which included
fighting majors to Brad
Taylor and Craig Simpson.
Drubbed by Hawks
Exeter played Mitchell on
even terms for two periods
last Tuesday, but a
disastrous first period
spelled the difference as the
Mitchell crew posted a 12-5
win.
Mitchell scored seven
unanswered goals in the first
period to salt the win away
early, although the local
Hawks did manage to get
into the game in the final two
stanzas after coach Ron
Bogart moved most of his
defencemen to forward
positions and put some of the
wingers back on defence.
Kerry Bedard, Rick
Lindenfield, Dwight Consitt,
Dave Atthill and Dave
Kinsman scored for Exeter,
with the assists going to
Bedard, Dennis Preszca tor,
Bryan Baker and Atthill with
one each and Ken Varley
with a pair.
Mitchell picked up 11 of 17
penalties called, a tote.
which included fighting
majors to Dwight Consitt
and Steve Elliott.
Daryl Stacey paced the
Mitchell attack with four
goals while Mike Avery had
a pair,

The Lucan-Ilderton Jets
after dropping an 8-5
decision to the Woodstock
Royals Friday night came
back with a strong per-
formance Sunday as they
lost 4-2 to the same club.
In Sunday's game the Jets
stayed with the Royals most
of the way with a 2-2 tie at the
end of two period's of play.
After falling behind 3-2,
coach Bill White pulled
goalie Peter Crosbie in the
last minute of play for a sixth
attacker, but, the move
backfired with Ray Tilley of
Woodstock scoring into an
empty net with 12 seconds
remaining.
The Jets will be on home
ice at the Ilderton arena for
both scheduled games this
week. They will meet the
Chatham Maroons Friday
night at 8:15 and the
Stratford Perths will be in
Sunday afternoon for a 2
p.m. contest.
Friday's game was
marred by several fights.
Jets goalie Peter Crosbie
was ejected at 7:37 of the
first period as the aggressor
in a fight with Paul Downing
of Woodstock. Crosbie
claims he was speared by
Downing and took after the
Woodstock player,
Crosbie's successor Dan
Murray was involved in a
second period skirmish in
which seven players were
ejected for failing to go to the
bench when a fight started.
Banished from the game
were Dave Brown, Bruce
Reddick, Rick Banks and
Jamie Robb of the Jets and
Ted Brown, Din 'Donohue
and Randy Stubal of
Woodstock.
Murray received five
minutes for his part in the
fight as did his opponent Ray
Tilley. Woodstock goalie Ken
Kitching was assessed two
minutes for leaving his
crease. He wandered up to
his 'own blueline to get a
closer look at the' action.
Woodstock led 2-0 at the
end of the first period on
goals by Doug Paton and
Steve Degurse. In the second
session, Jim O'Bright
,:tounted for Woodstock and
Ed Parkinson replied for the
Jets on an unassisted effort
with his club enjoying a man
advantage.
Defenceman Barry
Baynham scored two of the
four Lucan-Ilderton third
period goals. The first came
on passes from Steve
Proctor and Ed Parkinson
and passing help on the
second was provided by
Hugh Mitchell and Tom
Hodgins.
The other Jets scores were
Randy Kraul from Barry
Baynham and Tom Hodgins
and Dave Revington as he
converted a pass from Ed
Robb.
Ted Long scored twice for
Woodstock in the final 20
minutes of play and Doug
Paton, Jim O'Bright and
Doug McFarland counted in
single fashion.
Each team had 40 shots on
the opposition net. Petei.
Crosbie faced eight in the
Jets net while his successor
Don Murray looked at 32
shots.
Get early lead
The Jets were on even
terms at 2-2 at the end of two
periods of play in Sunday's
loss to Woodstock, but, the
opposition rallied for two
unanswered goals in the final
session.
The only score of the first
period came from the stick
of Doug Paton of Woodstock.
The second period was
barely underway when Hugh
Mitchell put the Jets back on
even terms on a three-way
effort with Randy Kraul and
Brian Johnson.
Jim' O'Bright re-
established the Woodstock
margin at 15:37 of the second
period and Bob Dean shot the
equalizer for the L-I club at
15:37 with passing assistance
coming from Barry
Baynham and Hugh Mit-
chell.
