The Exeter bantams were
the only team to post a
victory in Shamrock action
this week, although four
other games ended up in ties
for local entries in some
exciting hockey action.
The bantams beat London
Minor by a score of 3-1 in
London, Wednesday.
Randy Ford started
Exeter off with a goal in the
first period and they built it
to 3-0 with two in the third by
John Kernick and Scott
Brintnell.
London spoiled Peter
Dearing's shutout bid with
less than five minutes left in
the game.
Picking up the assists on
the three Exeter goals were
Brian Blackburn, Brintnell
and Darren Vandergunst.
The previous night, the
locals were drubbed 7-3 in
Strathroy.
Pee wees rally
After being bombed 8-0 in
Strathroy, Monday, the local
pee wees appeared headed
for another trouncing on
Tuesday when they travelled
to London Minor, but they
rallied from a three-goal
deficit to post a 5-5 tie.
Exeter took a quick 2-0
lead in that game, only to
have London come back with
five straight markers to take
a lead that appeared in-
surmountable.
However, Exeter scored
three times in the final 10
minutes to gain the tie, with
the final marker coming
with only 40 seconds left in
the contest.
George Pratt, Steve Getild,
Brett Batten, Scott Lovie and
Sean Whiteford scored the
markers, Picking up assists
on the plays were Terry
Zachar, , Pratt, Lovie, Trevor
Johnston and John Wells.
Lose close one
Exeter midget II almost
• pulled a major upset on
Sunday when they played
their second game of the
season and were edged by a
2-1 count by Lucan.
The teams traded goals in
the first period and then
battled on even terms before
Lucan finally pulled out the
win when Paul Wraith
blinked the light behind Paul
Cooper with five minutes
left.
Mark Vandergunst scored
for Exeter with the assists
going to Steve Francis and
R. Laing, while Jamie
Shipley scored Lucan's other
marker.
A parade of third period
penalties dimmed Exeter's
chances to win the contest as
they served six minors and
they were playing a man
short on the winning tally.
Post tie
The Exeter atoms came
within two minutes of win-
ning their first game of the
season, but had to settle for a
2-2 tie with London Minor on
Tuesday.
Exeter jumped into a 2-0
lead in the second period
when Steve Lingard scored
on .a play with Scott Boyd
and Danny McLean, while
Ron Loucks picked up the
other on an unassisted effort.
London got back in the
game midway through the
third and then evened the
count with only 1:19 left in
the contest.
Goal t e nders Scott
Heywood and Fred Gregus
came up with several key
saves to keep Exeter in the
contest, The genie was' a
reversal of form for the
Broncos as they had been
beaten 7-2 by the same team
at the rec centre the previous
week.
Novice lose .again
The Exeter Waxers lost
their fourth Shamrock
contest at the rec centre,
,Sunday, but came up with
their best display of the
season as they held the,
powerful Lambeth entry to a
5-4' win.
After spotting the visitors
a quick one-goal lead, the
local lads rebounded to take
a 2-1 margin on goals by
Graham Arthur and Doug
Clark.
In the middle frame,
Lambeth rattled in four
goals in just over four
minutes, but the locals kept
trying and pulled to' within
one when Doug Clark scored
in the third and they came
close on a couple of other
good opportunities.
Drawing assists on the
goals for Exeter were David
Josephson and Alan
Blommaert with a pair each
and singles by Scott Wedlake
and Graham Arthur.
Two players out
The Exeter midgets had to
settle for a 2-2 tie against St.
Marys, Wednesday, but they
also lost the services of two
players for at least three
games when they picked up
match penalties for butt
ending. Drawing the
penalties were Dave Shaw
and Bill Renning.
The locals are already
playing short handed due to
football injuries to Bill
Glover, Mike Clark and Jeff
Rowe.
The teams traded goals in
the first period with Mike
Murray scoring for Exeter
on an unassisted effort.
St. Marys took a ,2-1 lead in
the middle stanza and held
on to it until the 11:30 mark
when Rick Lindenfield
picked up the equalizer on
another unassisted dash.

Finkbeiner recorded the shut
out.

on Friday when they battled
to a 1-1 score in Lambeth.

blood in the second period,
