Everyone welcome. Lunch,
makes you feel better, and
gives you more endurance
for a long day at work. He
also says that running allows
him to eat anything he wants
with no weight problem.
But it has its drawbacks,
too. "It takes a lot of time,
showers, hot water and
soap," Albert says. He also
says that shoes are an ex-
pense, because he likes to
have good quality footwear.
He has both racing flats and
training shoes.
Albert says he is in shape
for the marathon, but he
knows he has to take it easy
at the beginning of the race,
"There's nothing like run-
ning out of gas, you have to
pace it right." Another
problem is dehydration - not
having enough water to
drink. A dehydrated person
gets goose bumps, and if he
doesn't stop running and
walk he will go into shock.
Sometimes they even pass
out, he says.
He's heard that the Skylon
Marathon covers a rough
course. It takes the runners
along the lake, and
sometimes there are cold
winds off the lake. Albert's
hoping for a nice sunny, cool
day. The race at Springbank
was perfect weather-wise, he
says.
Until October 13 Albert can
be seen running around
town. His favourite route
takes him out Huron Street
and along the road past
Ironwood Golf Course.

GRAND BEND-238-2161
GRANDMA'S SUBMARINES
Exeter has its very own
Marathon Man! Albert
Vandyken of Sherwood
Crescent is not your average
evening jogger. He's in
training for the biggest race
a runner can go in - the
Marathon. A Marathon is 26
miles, 385 yards.
The big day is this Satur-
day, and it's called the
Skylon Marathon. The race
starts in Buffalo New York,
and goes across the Peace
Bridge. It finishes at the
Skylon Tower in Niagara
Falls, Ontario.
Albert runs about eight
miles a day, and he figures
he's run about 40 miles a
week since the first of
January. He says he "never
was that good" at running,
and he's just doing it for the
fun of it.
Recently he ran in the
12 mile race at Springbank
Park in London. He placed
157 out of about 300 runners.
He made the 12 mile trip in 74
minutes. Since he was suf-
fering from a head cold, and
breathing was difficult,
Albert felt this was pretty
good time. He says he didn't
push himself too much
because he didn't want to
risk any problems this close
to the Marathon,
Albert was a runner when
he was attending college in
Guelph eight years ago. In
1969 he ran in the big Boston
Marathon, and was pleased
to have completed the race:
"But I didn't do that well, I'd
like to redeem myself."
Now after eight years, he
has started running again.
He has joined the London
Pacers, a group which runs
together for fun.
The trick in running a long
race is 80 per cent mental,
Albert says, Once you're in
decent shape, he says, you
should be able to make it
through a long race, "Sure it
hurts, no question, but if you
let your mind get to you, you
want to quit," he addecl.
Albert says that running
Marathon runner
