The Exeter Saveway team won the Southwestern Fastball Association crown Sunday night with their fourth straight victory over Nairn. Pacing the 4-0 Exeter win was a one-hitterpitching performance by Brian "Ace" Hodgins, Congratulations to the Saveway club and Brian for his great individual effort. This is the second time in four years that an Exeter team has won this championship. In 1976 the Royals turned the trick. Only four players remain from 1976. They are Brian Hodgins, Doug Pearson, Dennis Bierling and Paul. McKnight. Other members of the 1976 club were Jim Pfaff, Terry Bourn; Jack Glover, Pete Glover, Joe O'Rourke, Scott Burton, Barry Baynham, Bill Farquhar, Gard Mauer and Ron Mason. The same congrats go to the Exeter midgets and Dashwood bantams. Each team won a Western Ontario Athletic Association championship in their categories. The Exeter club defeated Kincardine 4-1 in Crediton Sunday afternoon and the Dashwood youngsters ousted Wingham. A crucial week This is the final week of the major league baseball season and definitely the most important in the 11 year existence of the Montreal Expos. As this is being written Sunday night, the Expos hold a narrow one-half game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates and have one extra game to play. The two contenders in the National league eastern division meet head-on in four games early this week. The final game between the Expos and Pirates tonight, Wednesday will be shown on CBC television. If the Expos reach the 100 win mark trey would certainly win the pennant, They need seven victories to reach that magic mark and at least two of those would have to be over the Pirates and that would do the trick. The Montreal club seems to have a slight edge in the schedule. They meet the lowly Atlanta Braves in a doubleheader Thursday while the Pirates meet St. Louis and Chicago. While the Expos may be somewhat less experienced in pressure play than the Pirates, their manager Dick Williams could make the difference to put them into the World Series. Williams is trying to win his fifth pennant as a manager. He won league championships two years each with the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics. He was fired at Boston because he was too mean. Williams disputes this description saying, "I'm not tough, all I ask it that the players hustle and don't beat themselves." The Expos all season long have shown the ability to bounce back from almost sure defeat. They have won 39 games so far this year by coming from behind in the eighth or ninth inning. Chance to fish Any ardent fisherman in the area who would like to show their abilities have that chance in Bayfield in about two weeks time. The Bayfield Lions club is sponsoring a rainbow trout derby for 48 hours from 12 noon Friday, October 12 to the same time on Sunday. The official weighing-in will be at McLeod Fisheries from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Kay McLeod ac- ting as official judge. Football starts The regular Huron-Perth football season for the two South Huron District High School teams starts Thursday afternoon. IN SAFE PLACES Exeter Saveway won the Southwestern Fastball Association championship Sunday night with a 4-0 victory over Nairn. Sunday's win climaxed a four game sweep of Nairn. The other scores were 9-2, 17- 10 and 4-3. During two playoff series, the Saveway club won seven games while losing only one. They defeated Lieury 1-0, 9-0 and 3-1. Their only loss was to Lieury by a score of 4-3. In Sunday's series finale, Saveway scored what proved to be the winning run in the first inning as Brian Taylor singled and scored on a double from the bat of John Gillespie. The score was upped to 2-0 in the fourth when Brion Penhale singled and scored a similar hit by Brian Hodgins. In the Exeter fifth, Dave Watson singled and raced home on a long triple by Doug Pearson. The final Saveway marker came in the bottom of the sixth as ,Dan Heywood and Brion Penhale singled. Brian Hodgins was the winning pitcher for Saveway. He allowed only one Nairn hit. It came in the top of the last inning with one out, a double by Gerald Nordemanns spoiling a no- hit bid. Hodgins who gained six of the seven playoff victories struck out four batters in his near perfect performance. Ernie Schlegel was the Nairn pitcher. He allowed nine hits while fanning two. Saveway 17 Nairn to Tuesday Saveway travelled to Nairn and won a real slugfest 17-10 to take a 2- 0 lead in the final series. Saveway opened up in the top of the first with three runs as Doug Pearson tripled Town of Exeter Recreation Committee: We, the the undersigned members of Exeter Saveway Fastball Team, wish to lodge an official protest to the Committee over the recent incident involving removal of the home-run fence at the softball diamond to ac- commodate theExeter Fair. We obtained permission from the Recreation Com- mittee to erect a fence, and various softball and hardball teams have benefitted front it throughout the year. We would like to point out that the expense for the fence came entirely from the Saveway team, and mem- bers of the Recreation League and Hardball League aided us in the labour to construct the fence. The final game of the league championship was played on Sunday night. We arrived at the park in the afternoon to find the diamond littered with ap- ples, papers, and vArious forms of garbage, and the fence removed. A further search revealed the base bags and liner had all been removed from the storage shed to places unknown. A tall to the recreation director as to why the fence was not reconstructed brought no acceptable an- swer. Apparently the prospect of a championship team from the Southwestern Fastball League has little appeal to the recreation people Of and Brion Penhale homered to bring in two runs. Brian Hodgins followed with another home run for the third run. Nairn got one run back in the bottom of the first as Gary Schell homered. Saveway went ahead 5-1 in the second as John Gillespie reached on an error and Rick Schilbe's long fly ball was dropped and went for a home run. Nairn went ahead in the bottom of the second on five runs as Brian Ropp homered and four singles pushed the runs across. Saveway knotted the count at 6-6 in the third as Brian Hodgins singled and scored on Paul McKnight's single, They took the lead 8-6 in the fourth as Brian Taylor blasted a long home run, Rick Schilbe singled and Dan Heywoods single scored him, Nairn knotted the count at 8-8 in the bottom of the fourth as Gerald Nordemanns hit a two run homer. Saveway went ahead 12-8 in the fifth as Paul McKnight reached first on a fielders choice, John Gillespie walked, Brian Taylor singled and Rick Schilbe blasted a long home run, Saveway increased their lead to 17-8 in the top of the seventh as Paul McKnight doubled and John Gillespie Brian Taylor, Rick Schilbe and Doug Pearson singled, Nairn completed the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Steeper, Randy Malcolm and Ernie Schlegel toiled for Nairn giving up 17 hits while striking out four batters. Brian Hodgins started for Saveway and went four innings giving up eight runs on 12 hits. Dan Heywood came on to pitch the final Exeter. No one bothered to ask any member of the team if the diamond was still in use, or if the fence, bases, and liner was needed. The local newspaper has carried full reports as well as editorial comments as to the progress of the team to the championship in recent weeks .Perhaps the local recreation people respon- sible for the diamond do not read the local sports com- ments. We would like to know who authorized removal of the fence and the equipment, and why the same person was not responsible for the reconstruction of the fence and the return of the equipment in time for the game on Sunday night. We have no alternative but to present the matter to the committee and the public, in the sincere hope that it may prevent another occurrence to our team or another team in the area in the future. Sincerely, Exeter Saveway Fastball Team 1979 Southwestern League Fastball Champs. Saveway 4 Nairn 3 In a well played game Thursday night Exeter Saveway eked out a 4-3 win over Nairn to take a com- manding 3-0 lead in games in the finals, Nairn opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Gary Schell walked and Ernie Schlegels bunt was misplayed allowing two runs to score. Saveway got a run back in the bottom of the first as Doug Pearson doubled and scored scored on Dan Heywood's single. Nairn went ahead 3-1 in the fourth as Rob Bender came in to score on a single, Saveway knotted the count at 3-3 in the fifth when Dave Watson doubled and Rick Schilbe hornered to continue his hot hitting. Saveway scored the winning run in to score on Brian Taylor's ground ball, Ernie Schlegel toiled for Nairn allowing seven hits while striking out three batters, Brian Hodgins picked up the win for Saveway as he tossed a two hitter allowing two singles while striking out two batters. Four present members of the Saveway were with the Exeter Royals when they won the league cham- pionship in 1976. They are Brian Hodgins, Dennis Bierling, Doug Pearson and Paul McKnight. The Centennials now go into B-division contention with an opening semi-final game at Canner's field at 4 p.m., Sunday, 30 September. Their opponents will be Huron Park. All the scoring in the West Williams game happened in the first half, Van Massenhoven's goal went in on a bounce within moments of the start. Then, at 35 minutes, Exeter's Al Hern crossed the ball for Martin DeBruyn to head in for an equalizer, But at 44 minutes, Ted VanWeert put West Williams into the lead with the game-winner from a scramble in front of the Exeter net. The Centennials' best chances seemed to come midway through the first half when they literally had West Williams on the run, West Williams, however, countered in the final 45 minutes with long, searehing shots down the centre, which they then played off for We've got it — more Moto-Ski® for 1980.
