Hensall council learned
their bid to annex a portion
of Hay Township, on the
south of the village, could
result in an Ontario
Municipal Board hearing,
Four of approximately 17
families in the area proposed
for annexation are objecting
to the annexation bid.
The objections include the
fear their taxes would in-
crease when they became
apart of the village of
Hensall, loss of rural mail
delivery and concern that
their children would no
longer be bused to school.
The four families sent
letters to Hensall council
outlining their objections -
the same objections raised at
a public meeting held in
August to debate the an-
nexation issue.
Reeve Harold Knight
reported Huron County
Roman Duzus said unless the
differences between the
village and the four families
could be resolved, the
situation could result in an
OMB hearing.
Mr. Duzus suggested
that representatives from
Hensall and Hay Township
councils meeting with the
objecting parties and try to
resolve the situation.
One fear of the residents
objecting to annexation was
that they would immediately
have to hook into the Hensall
sewer and water systems.
Clerk Betty Oke said this
wouldn't be the case, unless
something happened to their
own systems and they
requested a hook-up.
Reeve Knight said the
families who objected to the
annexation proposal "are
trying to preserve a certain
lifestyle and you can't blame
them for that."
Council also received a
letter from Wintario
requesting further in-
formation on the arena
fundraising, project. The
fundraising committee still
must raise another $20,000
from the community.
Councillor Harry Klungall
suggested jokingly that the
village needed to hire
telethon organizer Jerry
Lewis for an hour to raise the
needed funds.
The council also received
committment from the
ministry of culture and
recreation to assist up to the
sum of $20,000, in the con-
struction of a multipurpose
athletic field and tennis
court in Hensall.
The planned construction,
expected to cost $80,000 over
the long term, will be phased
over a number of years. The
first phase is the con-
struction of a ball diamond,
which will cost ap-
proximately $5,000.
Council also received a
letter of thanks from Grace
Tribner, the student who
worked with Betty Oke this
summer in the Hensall town
office.
Building inspector Her-
man van Wieren reported he
had issued $48,000 worth of
building permits. Permits
were issued to Ernest
Davies, 62 Nelson Street, for
an addition to his home; to
Freida Boa, 152 Richmond
Street for exterior
renovation to a home; to
Traylor Incl. Ltd., Queen
Street, for an addition; to
394205 Ontario Ltd., 88
Nelson Street, for renovation
of a building; to the same
company, 100-102 King
Street, for renovation of a
building; to Marilyn Taylor,
Queen Street for an addition
to a building and to H.
Berens, Wellington Street,
for repairs to his basement.
