Playoff needed
A playoff was necessary to
decide a winner in Thur-
sday's junior golf playoff at
the Ironwood course,
Scott Bogart won a sudden-
death playoff against Jeff
Van Harlen and Jeff Pfaff.
The threeyoungstershad tied
with identical scores of 91 in
the 18 hole competition.
Sean Whiteford was the
low net winner with a score
of 72 and Mike Tiedeman
required only 31 putts over
the 18 hole distance to win in
that category. A special
putting contest was won by
Jeff Wareham.

Dave Holtzmann fired a 37
to lead the low gross golfers
in the "A" flight in
Tuesday's regular men's
night at the Ironwood course.
Bob Flettcher with a 34 was
the low net winner in the
same flight and Al Taylor
with a e was best in low
gross the "B" flight and
Fred 1Violumfrsteeg's 31 was
the loW net Score.
In the "C" flight Fred
Wells was the low gross best
with a 42 and Walt Tiedeman
was in with a 30 for low net
honours.
The "D" flight winners
were Chan Livingstone low
gross at 45 and Scott Brice
low net with a 29.
Wayne Parsons was the
juvenile winner with a 44 and
Dave Holtzmann took the
prize for the tee shot coming
closest to the pin. He missed
by two feet,
The club's match play has
come down to the finals with
Wayne Pearce and Paul Van
Gerwen the only two left in
contention. They will be
meeting for club honours this
week.
The men's season at
Ironwood will conclude on
Sunday, September 9 with an
18 hole competition. Tee-off is
between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.

After dropping a close 2-1
decision to Hamilton in the
Canada Cup quarter-finals
last week, Huron County's
Lakeport Steelers peewee
soccer team came back in
fine style to dispose of South
London 5-2 at Greenway
Park, London Saturday in an
International Mercer Cup
semi-final.
Playing in near 100 degree
temperature, the Steelers
surprised their opponents
with some fast open soccer
and collected three well
taken goals in the first 15
minutes of play through
attacking half-back Dave
Murray and strikers Brad
Hymers and Robbie
Chapman.
Just before half-time,
Steelers centre-back Greg
Greatrex from Grand Bend
made it 4-0 with a superbly
executed 50-yard drive that
gained the enthusiastic
applause of all present.
After the interval, South
London looked stronger
than a now tiring Steelers
and they stormed back with
two goals before Lakeport
successfully slowed the
Exeter and area
youngsters won a large
number of the recreation
championships at the recent
Boom's Recreation Camp
held near Goderich,
This was the 18th edition of
the camp which was
established when camp
director Don "Boom"
Gravett was recreation
director in Exeter.
Kendra Arthur won three
firsts in intermediate girls
competition, She was the
winner in showdown, golf
putting and softball throw.
Scott Bogart won the
senior boys events in golf
putting and basketball.

junior boys horseshoe pit-
ching,

Hensall was best in in-
termediate boys showdown
Don Cowan and Wayne
Parsons combined to win the
junior-senior golf tour-
nament at the Ironwood ;off
course, Monday. The e ent
was formerly known as the
father and son tournament.
Cowan and Parsons
combined for a best ball
score of 70. Placing second
with a score of 71 were Bob
and Rich Fletcher. Third
with a similar score were
Gord Ross and Doug Flet-
cher.
Finishing fourth and fifth,
game down to their own
pace.
It was regular defenceman
Chris VanGerwen of Exeter
who sealed the issue for the
visitors when he scored goal
5 from the outside-right
position mid-way through
the second-half,
This victory puts the
Steelers into the 1979
International Mercer Cup
and Mike Tiedeman, Exeter
was the senior winner.
In golf putting, Kendra
Arthur was best in in-
termediate girls and Angela
Cottrell won in junior girls.
Deanne McKnight was the
intermediate girls basket-
ball winner, Kendra Arthur
was second and Brenna
Weir, third. Graham Arthur
was third in junior boys, Jeff
Pfaff was second and John
Wells, third in senior and
Graham Arthur, third in
junior.

girls showdown and com-

second in the pillow fight.
